How do I stay asleep the whole night through?

I wake up multiple times each night and I invariably wake up an hour before my alarm goes off. No matter what time I go to sleep, I wake up around 7am. I'm overweight, so I know that probably has something to do with it, but I've been overweight for most of my life and this inability to stay asleep has only been happening for the last year or so. I don't have any problems falling asleep, it's just staying asleep that is tough. I used to listen to music while I slept, but now I turn on a movie instead. I have tried melatonin (which had almost no effect at all) and Z-Quill (which worked for a while) but I'd really rather not take pills/medicine if there's a more natural way to stay asleep.

Can I get some ideas on how to help myself stay asleep?

    Get into a busy life.

tire yourself. do lots of mental and physical work.

if u are tired enough then you'll get a good sleep even if you lie down on your carpet.

    or an alternative.

SEX. yeah lots and lots of it. so that you'll be tired and sleep like a baby.

First, turn off all the noisy stuff. Make sure your mattress and pillow are doing what they should. Make sure you are properly hydrated. Don't take B vitamins except in the morning, don't take ginseng, avoid caffeine after lunch. Don't eat after 8 pm. Be aware of food sensitivities that can make your metabolic rate increase. Avoid refined sugar. Get checked for sleep apnea. And stress is sleep killer number 1.

I have always been an early riser, no matter when I go to sleep. I will nap around 2pm if I didn't get enough sleep but staying in bed past 5:30 or 6am is nearly impossible for me. In recent years, since extensive radiation and chemotherapy and some quite radical surgery to treat cancer, I have not had more than 12 or 15 really solid nights sleep. I wake at around 3am and again around 5 when I usually get up. I will on occasion sleep until 6 or 6:30 but rarely will I sleep past 7 (without a really good snogging the night before). It sucks sometimes but I love mornings and have always been up fairly early (7 am for most of my life).

Good luck sweetie, hope you get some sleep.
