Recommend a REAL shock collar for serious problem?
OTC collars are a joke. Need a referal for a collar that works- I mean really lets the dog feel it. I tried 2 cheaper brands- one from Ebay- put in new batteries- cranked the setting- shaved the dog's neck- dog barks constantly every day full volume. Cheap collars s ck. If this dog won't be silenced I must put it down or it will literally jeopardize my home. I cannot rehome it as it has bitten. I won't take any verbal abuse about how bad an owner I am as I've had this dog for over 8 years and jumped through hoops for it and a shelter will kill it because it has bitten. Now I have corrected most of the bite and aggression issues but I can't stop the barking. I MUST move to a micro apartment to obtain a new job. If the dog barks it can't stay there. If it can't stay there it will die. These are the cold hard facts.
PLEASE recommend a bark collar that works. If you can't help me just ignore my question.
I've been a shelter volunteer for 14 years. I've been a pet owner all my life and had this dog for 8 years- since she was 4 mos old. I've been a Yahoo Answers respected user for 6 years. This is a legit question that needs legit answers.
Thank you
MLE: any ideas where to buy a used collar from this manufacturer? As I found out, Craigslist stuff doesn't work (Uh- that's why they sold it to suckers like me)
LOL but on a very tight buget
Fidos City:
People who have owned a dog for 8 years as I have and STILL can't stop the barking need a squirt bottle about as much as a hen needs a flag ( I AM BEING POLITE TO YOU )
I do not have a squirt bottle by my bed at 4 am when my dog is barking at falling leaves. Do you???
If you think I am exaggerating, read the 6 YEARS of my Yahoo Answers Gripes about the SAME DOG
JESS:
E collars are a last option to save this dog's life. This dog is neurotic, psychotic, and was actually dangerous to every living thing under the sun including the animals and people in the home with it. The dog is 8 YEARS+ old and I've had it for *8 years and it is getting WORSE not better. I have hired trainers, bought books, done everything I can to retrain it. It bit me, bit my boyfriend of 14 years, growled at my daughter, attacked my cats, counter-surfed, burned itself in the oven lunging at a hot roast, attacked cars in my driveway...you have not read my posts.
"Normal" correction methods don't work on an insane dog. I AM INSANE for even trying to fix this.
I AM MOVING IN 12 DAYS
shock collar only option
thank you
Whoever this Chix idiot is apparently thinks that all animals are sane, therefore all the fault must lie with the owner. How bizarre! He also thinks that I am a cruel and stupid owner because all of the things that my dog has done and all the things that I have tried to do to retrain and prevent the problems are my fault for not tying the dog to my leg everywhere I go. He criticized me for being a shelter volunteer and called me a rampant animal abuser and somehow 3 people decided to thumbs him up. I did not see an offer from him to adopt my dog. I just saw a guy who wants to pummell me for trying to save the life (WITH AN ADMITTEDLY HARSH METHOD) of a dog that anybody other than me would have given up or euthed a long time ago.
Thanks so much, Chix. Did your penis grow while you were insulting me? You know less than your small penis about my dog or my situation. You don't know d i c ki

Having used an electric collar for my own dogs, let me see if I can offer you any help.
You could look at the Martin system training collars, here you go ---> http://www.martinsystem.eu/contenu.php?lg=en&rub=p...
These are used by many professionals, though they come at hefty price tag.
You could also look at the Tri - tronics //// Dogtra series, I have a dealer in my area, and have purchased these collars from her.
Dogtra - http://www.dogtra.com/
Tri Tronics - http://www.tritronics.com/
These brands really Deliver, and I mean DELIVER, lol.
Good collars ARE hard to find, and these have been the three brands I would recommend, that REALLY work, though they ain't for the average penny pincher.
@Jess: The fact this user is even keeping this dog alive is real commitment, the dog would have been killed if it were mine.....@OP: Good luck, and I hope it works out.

Chix ~ Some of the best trainers out there use an electric collar....Fred Hassen being one of them. Electric collars have a time and place, and seeing that this dog's life is at stake, this is one of those times. I really don't see why these tools seem cruel to you? A prong collar & choke chain cause pain, so why is it okay to use either of the two? I really don't like the word "shock collar" as it gives the collar a bad name, though yes it does "shock" it isn't cruelty as some may think. To add, you have not seen this dog, nor do you understand this user's situation...and I HIGHLY doubt you have even seen one of these collars in use, please educate your clueless mind about the electric collar & please leave out the emotional baggage.
Electric collar - The best training tool ever created that CAN be used in the same way a clicker does.

The fact the dog has gotten worse living with you is evidence that you are not competent to own it. Whatever you read, or believe, is wrong. And your dog is paying the price.
A dog that counter-surfs, attacks cats, bit other people is owned by an incompetent owner.
ANY of these problems could be corrected without shock - the dog simply needed to be leashed in the home and have structured living.
You are not insane, you are incompetent and cruel. Rather than condition the dog by prevention (ie restrict freedom) you choose to zap the dog senseless.
You no doubt are under the illusion that this is the dogs' fault - its obvious reading your post the dog lives in a chaotic environment without clear boundaries and has learned he can make decisions. He has also learned the owner is not to be trusted and hence the dog has bitten.
You think "commitment" is an excuse for abuse and cruelty. Do you think you are the only one in the world who has owned a difficult dog? The more force you apply to kill this dog's spirit - the less it trusts you.
If I was a dog - I would bite you too.
Posts like yours are EXACTLY why ecollars should be banned. You and those like you make me sick.
PS: I give a rats crap if you have been on Yahoo answers 6 years - if you have, clearly you have learned nothing. And if you actually do work for animal services, you reinforce my long held belief that the sole qualification of a shelter worker volunteer is too much spare time and a car.
One so called shelter volunteer in Ontario was recently convicted of killing (hanging) a dog till it died because the dog would not obey her - I guess she took lessons from you.
Do the dog a favour - put it down and don't get another.
I've starred this so that I can remember who you are - it makes me hurl to think others here who are so called "balanced trainers" would endorse it.

@ Manners Little shop of horrors. Not surprised you are in favour of this, you claim to be a rescue volunteer too. Another who hides in plain sight.

It's not the collars that are the problem. If you've tried a bunch of different collars and none are working, then obviously you need to try a REAL method of training instead.
Barking is actually a fairly easy problem to fix. You need to teach the "quiet" command until he has it down pat. But when he's barking, before you give the command, allow him to bark 3 times. Barking is a natural thing for dogs and a way for them to communicate, and if you try to stop the barking completely, you'll only frustrate him and you'll get nowhere. That's a big problem with shock collars, they do not allow the dog to bark even once, and I'd bet that's a big reason they aren't working for your dog.
You also need to desensitize him to whatever it is he barks at - doorbell, people outside, other dogs, etc. Let's say he barks at people walking by. Every day, arrange for someone to walk by the house. As soon as he starts barking, let him bark 3 times, and then give the "quiet" command. Do this over and over and over again, every day. Eventually, he'll learn to only bark three times. Same thing with the doorbell, or anything else. Have someone ring the doorbell, let him bark 3 times, tell him "quiet," and repeat, repeat, repeat.
You need to desensitize him to everything that makes him bark. If he's the type that barks at everything, it will be more difficult, but nowhere near impossible. It just requires time and patience.

I have two Dogtra remote collars, and I am very happy with both.
I am assuming your dog is a big dog. I have the Dogtra 1900NCP for my big dogs.
It's a remote collar, not an automatic bark collar, so I don't know if that is what you are looking for, but it got through to my 100 lb, incredibly highly pain tolerant Lab mix.
It was kind of a last ditch effort for me, too, since he would even go through hotwire on the fence to get a rabbit, and then just leave.
It has a vibrate function, which I use as a warning before moving to the shock. That's pretty much all I have needed with him for the last couple of years.
It was not a cheap collar, but I've had mine for probably four years now, and it still works perfectly (although I did have to replace the battery once.)

Isn't internet analysis great? :o)
It's amazing how someone in another part of the country, who has never met you or your dogs, can just KNOW more about both of you than you can possibly know yourself. :oP

Sportdog makes the best in my opinion. They are pricey, but work well. Go for the SD (stubborn dog) version.
EDIT: Yes, You can find used ones on ebay usually. I ended up just buying a new one on Amazon. I would suggest not buying them in a pet store, because they tend to run $50-$100 more at pet stores. The remote ones are pretty nice, I have not actually used their automatic ones but I have heard good things about them. I used a crappy automatic one for the barking, which doesn't really work very well, because I am a poor college student and at the time it was all I could buy.
EDIT: Lots of people will be against this. But ya know what, most of those people probably have never had a dog in this same situation. Good for you for keeping the dog, and keeping him alive.

Here you go. The best collars are going to cost you more then $50 new. The best most reliable collars made are manufactured by Tri-tronics (garmin) or dogtra. However the real tri-tronics before garmin bought the company are much superior. Sport dog makes a good one also. Go to the links below for more info. If you want to try a used one go through the collar clinic link.

rather than a bark collar, try a squirt bottel, water and vinager mix, squirt the dog when it barks and say no. Try more exercise and training.
