Should I go running late at night (around 9-11 pm)?

I'm a 17-year-old girl and I hate running while there are people out. I don't like it when people see me. I hate getting up early so I can't run early in the morning. I want to go running at night, because it's peaceful and I love how the night air feels. But I'm somewhat worried about getting murdered or something. I'm new to this neighborhood so I don't know much about it, but I know that there are teenage gangs roaming about, and I often find beer bottles scattered around my front lawn when I get up in the morning. But I don't know if I should use that as an indicator of how dangerous my neighborhood is. I live in a place where weapons and things like pepper spray are illegal, but I have a dog, a very large Rottweiler, so I would bring her along. I would wear baggy clothing to sort of disguise myself but I'm still very small and petite, however I'm not afraid to fight and defend myself. So should I do this? What would you do if you were in this situation?

Update:

What if I ran at 4 am? I would be running on weekdays, and who would be out at 4 am on a school/work morning?

Take a self defense class!!!! All women should take one just so they have that knowledge. I would take your dog with you and make sure you have a cell phone with you. Try to stay on lit sidewalks... If you have a friend that can go with you I would definitely do that. And ALWAYS make sure someone knows that you are going for a run, where you will be running and about how long you will be gone so if something happens they know where to go and look.

From the description that you gave I would say no. It just doesn't seem safe. You say you don't like during when there are people out. If no one is out at 9-11 I guess there is a pretty good reason as to why that is.

Also, if you are deadset on doing this trying to disguise yourself is not so smart. As you also have to worry about cars. I have almost gotten hit plenty of times by cars in broad daylight. People suck at driving. It's even worse at night where they can barely see you!

I run at 1 a. m. all the time. I love it but sometimes the scariest things can happen like a funeral car driving by. Just stay away from anyone if you see them and having pepper spray would be even better.

Don't run at night. If I were you I would suck up and run around noon. If you decide to run at night, nice knowing you. We will grieve your death.
