i put the wrong oil in my car, should i have an oil change or just top up with correct oil?

I have a 53 plate Vauxhall Meriva. After I got it, the oil light went on. I was driving and pulled over to a petrol station to get some oil. Not knowing much about my car, I asked the assistant what oil I needed. He said 15/40W. After topping it up once again with the same type, I've since found out that the correct oil for the car is, in fact, 5/30W.

The car seems to be running okay. Obviously I'd rather use the correct weight oil. Do you think it would be ok to just top up with 5/30W when the oil light comes on again? or would a complete oil change be a better idea?

News Flash: The witless fuel station attendant advised you to add *diesel engine oil which has very high amounts of anti-wear additives, phosphorus and zinc. These two additives in high amounts will shorten the life of your expensive catalytic converter.

Apparently you aren't in the habit of lifting the hood each week and pulling the yellow handled crankcase dipstick to check your oil level.

He who fills the engine with oil when the yellow warning light comes on will be the first to ruin an engine!

Do not overfill your crankcase or you will ruin the engine.

Man, simply take it to a oil change situation, have it flushed and refilled. You made the mistake, so go ahead and pay for it out of pocket and nobody will be the wiser. Do not run your automobile with the fallacious oil in it, specifically for 2 years. This can be a easy fix, just maintain the hindrance.

Don't worry about it, unless you were to put in non-detergent oil or something. Just because you mixed various weights of oil really doesn't mean much to your engine, just so long as you keep the oil level okay. As the engine ages sometimes you have to switch to heavier weight oil anyway. (40 weight) No problems.

it's best not to mix grades of oil.

the heavy grade you put in will not hurt your car, although it may be hard to start on a cold morning and will probably burn more oil than you are used to.

anyways, if your car was low on oil, it is probably close to time to change it. dirty oil gets used faster than clean oil.
