My Grandma would make us what her father would eat when he wanted something sweet. Take a piece of bread and butter it. Sprinkle white granulated sugar on top. It really is quite good and very cheap too!!

This question often produces a big 'Yuk..! List' everybody has. In my view, I truly detest eggplant. Don't love oysters. Beef fats. Minestrone Vegetable soup. Vegetarian meals of any style...... Nonetheless, I did a 'tasting menu' in a stylish restaurant and out of curiosity, opted for the 'Offal Menu.' I was once surprised and cheerful with the outcome. The most not likely parts of the animal had been served up and astoundingly tasty, so that one deserves a 'reserved judgement.'

My dad used to make what he called 'candy' It was softer and more sugary than toffee. If made with white sugar the end result was white and if brown sugar was used we had brown candy It was delicious. Our local markets stalls sold one called cough candy to which they'd added something but I never knew what it was. It was even nicer than the ones mum and dad made.
I, personally, like making fudge.

My mom used to make candy out of leftover mashed potatoes. I wish I knew how to make them. They had confectioner's sugar in them but I don't know what else. The texture was creamy and dense and they were delicious.
edit - I just read the others' answers. My mom's potato candy did NOT have peanut butter in it, I know that. But every time I try to google a recipe for this candy, it calls for P.B. I would love to find one without it.

My mother made allot of bread and rice pudding.
I try to make it like she did but it is never as creamy as hers was.
She had the right mix of spices, sugar and milk and baked it just perfect.
Once in awhile she would make a pound cake but mostly it was the puddings.
Anything to fill up the stomachs of her then 4 kids.

Potato candy. Boil one small potato, mash it with a fork, add about a box of confectioners sugar until it can be rolled out flat. Cover with peanut butter then roll up like a jelly roll, cut into pieces and put in frig. It's good and cheap and quick.

I was on the farm at a young age, we had plenty of cream & butter, and would gather black walnuts from the trees near the creek. It was the job of me and my sisters to crack those hard nuts, we'd sit on the cellar and pound them for hours to get a pint of goodies from the inside. Our reward was homemade black walnut fudge and usually made in the winter. We also got homemade peanut brittle and popcorn balls.

Mom used to make fudge and it was oh, so good. Her divinity was light and luscious, but the odd thing, it would not turn out so good if the weather was rainy. It would turn out more like taffy. Speaking of taffy, we did have taffy pulls a few times and that was fun!
