Using a network how can I get my computers to share files?
Ok, here's the deal: I Originally installed a cable modem and a wireless router upstairs on an Xp computer. I was downstairs with a built-in adapter on my computer. That was several years ago and now we have laptops and tablets in the house and they all share the connection just fine. I now have two computers at my workstation downstairs and would like to share files between them. I get tired of plugging in a usb drive to one, writing to it, unplugging it an plugging it into the other computer and opening the file. If I had a network I wouldn't have to do that. The computer that the modem and router were originally installed on is not even used anymore and is turned off. The various computers and tablets in use use various OS. Android and Nook for the tablets. Win Xp, Vista and 7 for the computers. Can someone show me what I need to do? I guess I already have a network since all the computers and tablets share the internet connection. I just need to know(exactly) what i need to do in each case to enable all to share files. I would like my Win 7 Ultimate machine to be the server, since that is the most powerful.
Thanks,
Paul
Thank you for the answers. One more question. I have switched 2 computers to the same workgroup. I have "shared" folders from each computer. My question is: How do I "see" the folders from one computer on the other. i have found nothing that addresses this problem.

All you have to do is be sure all computers have the same work group name and enable file and printer sharing! If they are all connected to the same router they are networked. Here is how to set the work group name http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/join-o...
Here is info on file sharing http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/file-a...
Or simply hit "Help" and type in share files! It is easy to do shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.

Like you said in the latter half of your post, all your devices should already be on the same network if you are connecting them to your wireless network (your router).
You can right click on a folder to share it, and then access that share easily from the other PC.
Microsoft has a nifty video right here that will guide you through the whole thing: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/share-...
