Users of Google+: Can you explain to me what +1 means?

I've just joined Google+ and am slowly figuring out it's intricacies, but I can't figure out what the red +1 button does. Is it like a "LIKE" button?

It's just like a like button.

    This is what google says:

+1 gets conversations going. Click the +1 button to give something your public stamp of approval. Then, if you want to share right away, add a comment and send it to the right circles on Google+.

The next time your friends and contacts search on Google, they could see your +1. You’ll help them find the best stuff on the web – and you might just start up another conversation!

Yup the quick answer is that it is indeed just like likeing a post on fb, add to that the fact that google takes note of the number of +1 an article gets for search rankings
