What Are Some Good College Level Novels to Write a Research Paper On?
I have to write a research paper for my Analytical Reasoning & Composition class on a novel. I wasn't really interested in any of the books he recommended so I looked on my own and thought Animal Farm would be a good choice because I could write about how it symbolizes war, totalitarianism, & communism. He said I could choose it but seemed unimpressed. I can't bare to read books about literal history, racism, or some woman/man in history. UGH. I like more fantasy adventure mystery type books. What are some good novels that are college level, considered a "page turner", & that would give me a lot to research & write about?

If you want something pretty controversial, with a lot of fantastic/magical elements, look into 'The Satanic Verses,' by Salman Rushdie. There is a *ton* to write about with that novel. It made the Ayatollah put out a fatwah (basically a death order) on the author.
In college, I also had a good bit of fun writing papers on 'Erewhon' by Samuel Butler. It's basically the Victorian equivalent of a mockumentary.
Feminist dystopia/sci-fi also tends to produce good papers. "Woman on the Edge of Time" by Marge Piercy and "The Female Man" by Joanna Russ could work. If you choose the latter, get in as an e-book, because most print editions are written in almost illegible, blocky font. Also, "Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood, as indicated by a previous poster, is excellent.
If you choose to go the feminist sci-fi route, I did a blog for a class in college years ago that might be useful for summary purposes: http://keeneobservations.wordpress.com./ I'm shocked it's still up, but it is.

He's not impressed, because most people read Animal Farm early on in high school. Everyone is taught that it symbolizes war, totalitarianism & communism, so your thesis wouldn't be original at all.
Here are some you might like:
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson is about the dual nature of man (good and evil) but may be too short to qualify.
The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins is one of the first mystery novels ever written.
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig is about a road trip and self-discovery during the 1960s. It's profound, but also an awesome read.
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood is about society changing into a dystopia overnight.
Looking Backward by Edward Bellamy is rather cool. He wrote it over 100 years ago but predicted things like cars, highways and radio. It's basically the story of a guy from his time visiting the future.

I enjoy fantasy also! I would recommend Tolkien's books but I'm not sure about the requirements for what you have to read. I personally really enjoy Haruki Murakami books, they're kind of strange but it makes it interesting and give you a lot to think about. Russian novels are often considered to be college-level - novels by Dostoyevsky or Nabokov, etc. And books by Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Faulkner, all of those writers from the '20s. Good luck in finding something, essays are a pain.

Milton's Paradise Lost is one of my favorites. In grad school, I studied the effects of Milton's Paradise Lost on Mary Shelley, as she wrote Frankenstein. You might to well to consider this line of thinking -- these early literary works have affected our lives in many ways -- Beowulf has been pushed onto the big screen with The 13th Warrior -- how did Milton's Paradise Lost affect other works? Or, how did Beowulf affect other works.... Something along those lines might help your brain to fall onto the topic.

probably something about Philosophy or a Philosopher. After all you are in an Analytical Reasoning class! Virtually most well known Philosophies or Philosophers will suffice.
