Best place to live between Baltimore and DC?

I got a job offer in the DC area and my buddy also got a job in the Baltimore area. We are both from MI and thought it was be better if we just found a place in between the two. We were looking at Laurel MD and Columbia MD for apartments or housing rentals. Any suggestions? Good places and places to avoid

Both of those are good choices, although I would opt for Laurel because of it's proximity to DC. I enjoy the DC area way more than Baltimore. Columbia may be better if you'd prefer a little more distance from the city -it's a tad bit quieter.

What you'll need to consider is transportation. Depending on where you work, parking will be non-existent or cost a ton. Plus the traffic/tolls are enough to make you want rip your steering wheel out.

You'll have plenty of options. There are commuter buses from Columbia into DC (not sure about Bmore) that have a few stops before dropping you off in the city. Or you can take the Marc train that runs from DC to Baltimore. Both of these services are limited to weekdays.

On the weekend, driving is less of a headache.

Budget budget budget. The area is expensive so whatever you are used to in MI just doesn't fly here. So, that will be your first consideration. Next, will be the ease of your commute. Driving sucks...in either direction, but parking is slightly better in Baltimore. However, alternative would be the MARC train or the metro...depending on where you decide to live.

That said, you should consider in addition to Laurel or Columbia, Odenton, Severn, Hanover, Annapolis Junction, or Elkridge. There are parts of Laurel you need to avoid as well as parts of Severn (stay away from Meade Village/Pioneer City....kind of like Romulous, MI)

The biggest hurdle you will face is getting to & from work. In most surveys the DC area is in the top 3 of the USA's worst traffic (often #1). It costs more to live in a place w commuter choices but it is so worth it. Both you & your friend need to research commuter options to/from you jobs for the places you are considering. On the very best days it's likely going to be a minimum 90 minute commute one-way---this assumes regular AM/PM rush-hour traffic. It's surprising how many folks eventually find a somewhat lower paying job in order to leave their commute behind. Good luck.

  • Columbia is pretty good, Laurel is ok too. They can be a little sketchy at night though. Almost anywhere in Anne Arundel county is good, and most of Howard and Montgomery County are pretty good too. Try to stay away from Prince George's County.
