I am reading a book and was wondering ...?
Am I the only one who thinks that Sade seems to have had a relatively negative attitude toward women. None of the women in "120 Days" seem to be respected by any of the main protagonists. Nor do the men for that matter. Was this a common attitude in 18th century France. Has it persisted in any way?

Look, women not being respected and abused has been going on for centuries, in all nations at some point or another. And yes there will always be men who look down upon women, It doesn't matter if your talking about modern day France or the 19th century Americas. Sorry, that's just how it is. 90% of the people with true, influential power will always abuse their power and belittle the rest of humanity, whilst trying to maintain their power and get richer while the poor get poorer. Take the Industrial revolutions for example, There were these few factory owners who were extremely rich, yet they gave extremely low wages especially for women and children, who were also frequently beaten and abused. Today big corporations do the same exact thing, except now they go to third world countries with large populations for cheap labor.

Women fantasize about being abused but at the same time speak out against it.
They make no sense at all.
