Is it safe to plug this hole?

There is a small hole in my aluminum rafters and some birds took up nest in there last year. I don't want them in there, as they are loud and its probably not a good idea anyway to have them so far up in there.

I just was thinking I would plug the hole this Spring and seal it off. However, I don't want to trap them in and kill them, ESPECIALLY if they've already laid eggs...

Any idea when they might lay a brood? It's the end of March in Northern Utah... It's been cold lately, if that helps.

Forget about the hole and go hug some trees. Pfft. You don't want to kill them. Ridiculous. I'd be out there with a 12 gauge loaded with bird shot. Look, we all know that birdies hatch in the spring. If you really want them to "live," give them a more attractive house with lots of food. Alternately, get a cat to do your dirty work for you. Cats kill hundreds of millions of birds per year. They couldn't care less about your baby birds.

If you plug the hole, you can also remove the birds an eggs . It is required to go inside to Check on the work, even if it was all done on the outside.

I'd have already done it. Chase them off and plug the hole.
