Why won't my dog stop scratching his eyes and head?
My 3 1/2 year old corgi/Eskimo mix has been scratching back and forth between his eyes and the top of his head. This has been going on for over a year now. We got him when he was 2 and the scratching started about 2 months after we got him. He scratches his eyes til they bleed and his head.
He has been on countless medications from steroids to antibiotics to allergy meds (including but not limited to Benadryl). He has been to hundreds of vet visits. Been on several high end foods. Grain free. Wheat free. Corn free. Soy free. Chicken free. With salmon oil. And yogurt(a probiotic). Now I am making his food. I'm boiling chicken and veggies for him and putting it into patties. I have also taken him to a dermatologist who put him on another medication that's not working. I need to fix my boy. Can anyone help?

Have him allergy tested and depending on results go ahead with allergy injections.
Food-wise, there is a completely non allergic food called z/d ultra by Science Diet. The food is made in a sterile laboratory and dogs cannot be allergic to it. Some people use it for about 3 months and then introduce one ingredient into the diet at a time to see what he reacts to, while others just leave their dogs on the food forever. It isn't just a high end, it's truly non allergic food. You can read about it on the Hills Science Diet website under prescription diets.
Our docs say that the number one food allergy is actually beef, but whatever your dog is sensitive to could be anything. Usually allergic dogs will have ear issues and perhaps itchy around the face/mouth or also around the anal area.
Could your dog be trying to scratch his face or ears and hitting his eyes and top of his head?
Does he have doggy wrinkles where infection has gotten in the cracks? If so, there are some pretty good wipes for that.
Allergy treatment is trial/error. When one thing doesn't work, others may be tried. We've had the best luck with a product called Temaril P. There's also Atopica. Benedryl really doesn't usually work at all. The steroids can stop the itching, but allergy dogs will begin the whole process over and over again when exposed to whatever they are allergic to.
I assume your dog has been skin scraped for mites. Assume also that his eyes have been stained to rule out corneal scratches/ulcers. His ears have been swabbed and contents read under the microscope.
We sometimes use Revolution for 3 treatments 2 weeks apart on itchy dogs, just in case it's something that's on the Revolution kill list. Easier to do that than to scrape sometimes, since mites aren't always found even when they are there.
I seriously doubt it has anything to do with fleas, but be sure to get your dog on Trifexis, which is comfortis with heartworm prevention. It's the fastest kill for fleas.
Make sure his head isn't staying wet. Skin that stays damp/wet will have the layers lifted up and then infection can keep getting in there.
Since there's no cure for allergies (perhaps allergy shots would be close) then your dog if allergic will be chronically itchy. Management will then become your goal.
One more thought--- have complete blood work run, including thyroid, just in case it's coming from something else.
I'm sorry! It's very exasperating for dog, owner, and vets, too!

The only thing I could think of is that the dog has dry skin. If I were you I would start giving him omega 3 pills every day, and I'd try shaving his face. It'll be hideous, but I've known dogs that it helps. Also, I'd take something like coconut oil and combine it with tea tree oil and apply it around the itchy places. Be sure you do NOT get it in his eyes!
Also, try finding a way to get him out of the habit of scratching. Maybe put a cone on him for a little while to let him soak up the mixture.

Have you tried Aloe Vera? I grow my own plants and I break the leaf open the sap inside really help with itching and healing on me and the dogs. If you can't grow one, then you can buy it in spray form in Whole Foods, close the dogs eyes and spray it, but the inside goo smeared on the spots works wonders. Just don't get it in his eyes. Hope this helps. Kisses, Treateater.com.

We often see hypothyroid symptoms totally reversed when commits to a plan that supports balance through nutrition and daily self-care. Learn here https://tr.im/RIr7O
Consume foods naturally high in B vitamins, such as whole grains, nuts, and seeds, and iodine (fish, seaweed, vegetables and root vegetables).
Exercise daily, at least 30–60 minutes per day, 4–5 times a week.
Practice deep breathing and other techniques that trigger the “relaxation response” – such as meditation and guided visualization.

.......I worry for you. I go to the dog park a lot and a few of them. Talk with many people like you. The vets never give the right info if they don't have an answer. After years of vet treatments for allergies and bugs and etc, I ended up killing my baby boy of 14 years. I, we...vets killed more than 80% of his liver. WATCH the liver ALT levels!!!!!!!! The gigantic liver tumor was removed but only maybe 10% working liver. It died and then killed his spleen so he died. WATCH YOUR MEDS!!! IF YOU CAN, TRY THIS VERY CHEAP AND HEALTHY. My other dog was old and getting sick, this worked. Her hair grew back and she looks and feels younger.
.......But answer for you that I ended up accidentally getting from the research of his death was to regenerate and detox his liver with Apple Cider Vinegar ACV (Braggs with Mother). 2 teaspoons in large glass of water EVERYday for a month, longer if needed (honey is usually okay for dogs and makes it taste better, if you try this get the unfiltered uncooked raw honey. I put it in a large needleless syringe and give her a couple of squirts a day. Do Not give your dog ACV in concentrated strength). AND To BATH once a week head to toe but not eyes or inside ears, but get closely around the eyes and all of the ear using White Distilled Vinegar (Heinz, made from corn, but same as ACV process)
.....If it is micro bugs, which it could be and the normal kind dogs have, your dog may be allergic to them and scratching is causing the normal bacteria to activate with these micro bugs. Something normal... could just be a perfect storm to your dog. The vets don't seem to catch it.
......Also just recently I told someone at the dog park about this and he went to his vet and they told him it would be okay to do it they don't guarantee anything but to also if he was going to go that route along with the vinegar bath he said his vet said to try Listerine mixed with baby oil and vinegar. Supposed to be some skin tonic for germs and bugs. Three weeks went by and I saw him. He said everything was working and the 3 months of medications never did. I could see his dogs hair was growing back and she wasn't itchy. First time I ever saw her playful.
......I'm not lying and I am not selling anything. Trying to spread the word because my dog died because of the medications and the veterinarians that could not diagnose him. Always first use vinegar and if Listerine in baby oil works, what the hell right!?
.....Lastly, when I went to the dermatologist for dogs trying to help my baby boy the vet said if it was an allergy or a bug it would not hurt to bathe him with Selsun Blue dandruff shampoo the one that has the Selenium Sulfide 1% but not with the menthol. It did help and control the condition to a comfort level for him, but was not a cure. For my female vinegar ACV inside and White Vinegar with Selsun blue has cured her hair loss. She doesn't dig at her feet anymore or scratch at her ears constantly. When I scratch her back, she doesn't love it like she used to... In fact now she could care less, I guess she's not itchy anymore.
......I hope this helps to all that reads it. And your dogs will be healthier for you loving them enough to read it and try it. Save the Dogs, Power to the Puppy. ;-)
