Suffering from Insomnia?

I don't know what to do. I've had trouble sleeping for the past two years and I'm not sure what to do. I usually don't fall asleep until at least 2 am, sometimes near 4 am. I don't know what the problem is! I'm 16, and I have a pretty active lifestyle. I have track practice after school, and basketball practice late at night so you would think I would tire myself out but I still can never fall asleep. I have tried reading before bed, listening to music, and just lying there with no distractions. No matter what, I can never fall asleep until very late. My doctor told me to try taking Melatonin but it does not work for me whatsoever. I have been taking drowsy allergy medicine lately to put me to sleep, but that doesn't always work either. It's getting to be a problem because I'm so tired during the day, but I still don't sleep! What do you think the problem is?

Sleeping pills can give you bad side effects such as headaches and drowsiness during the day so you are better off without them.

To sleep better just relax and switch off, if you can.

If you are having trouble switching off at bedtime some light exercise (for example, push ups or sit ups) at bedtime often helps you to relax, unwind and switch off and that often improves your sleep. Strenuous exercise at bedtime is likely to ruin your sleep.

Common OTC sleep aids include Chamomile tea, 5-HTP, Melatonin and Valerian Root.

Sleep enhancing foods include warm milk, turkey, cherries, oatmeal, bananas, wine and others as in http://au.search.yahoo.com/search?p=%22sleep+enhan...

One thing you should remember is there is nothing like a person should sleep so many number of hours a day. If your body a nd brain need only 4 hours of sleep well that is all. If you do not feel sleepy or tired during day time it the indication that your body and mind needs only rest for which you are getting now. For your satisfaction I am giving a tip to sleep. Do not watch TV or working on computer at least 2 hours before sleep. Do a light walk for30 minutes after dinner.

Try staying awake. You are more likely to fall asleep if you try not to.
