Republicans in North Carolina want to make a specific religion "the state religion".?

They also will not allow anyone who doesn't believe in God to run for any political position.

Even though it's only on the state level, doesn't that go directly against the intentions of the 1st Amendment of the Constitution?

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.."

I guess that doesn't matter if it's a "state congress". But what about rights as Americans?

Update:

Joe, the idea is to ANSWER my questions, not ask one of your own.

Update 2:

Kevin there's a huge difference between NOT BEING ALLOWED to run for office, and no one voting for you. Geez.

Update 4:

@THis guy, I did not report anyone asking for evidence. In fact, I posted a link for evidence. Where do you get off claiming that I did?

Update 5:

@Philip H and Me J, I know, it's so outrageous it's hard to believe! But there it is.

Here's a link if you haven't heard about it. I suppose nothing should surprise me since they recently voted to allow discrimination against gays in hiring, renting apartments, etc. Still, it is sad that there is apparently a state so filled with hate that they will turn themselves into a theocratic dictatorship.

First of all, people who don't believe in God are already prevented from running for elected office. I read a pew research study once that only 15% of American's would consider voting for an Atheist, lower than any other group they polled, including Muslims.
