B&A - Do you have a comfort book?

Hi.

Do have a comfort book? A book that makes you feel better when you feel sad or incompetent or lonely?

Do you have a guilty pleasure book? (Please don't say 50 Shades). A book that you read when you want to read some really bad fiction?

BQ - Would you take a book if it was for free, regardless of the content or author? It's *free*.

That will have to be the Harry Potter series (as my comfort book). I still remember reading the first book for the first time in my infant school :')

As for a guilty pleasure book, probably one called The Half Good Samaritan. It is good, but not brilliant. It has a few comical parts.

BQ - I won't, but my dad did once... It was 'Derek Acorah'. I can't stand him, but I had a good laugh reading about his pyschic experiences.

For me, every book is a comfort book. Every book provides distraction and comfort when I'm feeling sad, incompetent or lonely. ANything well written provides a hole I can crawl inside and block out the world.

I've read a fair amount of bad fiction. The way I see it, though, there's way too many astoundingly good books out there to waste time on the poorly written bestseller. Yes, I read some of Fifty Shades (about 20 pages before I couldn't go on), I've read a bit of erotica from time to time when the mood strikes, I've read a few silly romances. I end up feeling like I've just wasted my time, so I try to stay away.

And yes, I would take any free book. I have taken free books before that I read and immediately gave away. But I'd still take another that was offered. I've actually had a few authors on Shelfari send me PDF's of their work simply to get it read by someone. I've turned down none.

I don't have a specific comfort book, every book comforts me. Books take me away from real life, and I consider anything that can manage that to be comforting.

I read a lot of those annoying teen girl books, so I guess those are my guilty pleasures. As a matter of fact, my favorite series is Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard. I love the general story line and Sara is not a bad author, but most of the characters are completely unlikeable so it's a wonder that I can consider it my favorite anything.

BQ: Sure, I'm not one to pass up freebies.

shiver by maggie stiefvater (the whole series really, but shiver is my favorite. it's also the first book) and harry potter by j.k. rowling. they're my comfort books. the harry potter series just makes you feel... HOME.

for guilty pleasures i read twilight (or the fanfiction, but NOT 50 shades. that was kind of dreadful)

yeah, i would. it's a free book! i would probably give it a try too.

I do- Tamora Pierce's Wild Magic. I just love it

I guess so- it's not bad so much as cheesy and a bit predictable- Cinderella, Ninja Warrior. what can I say, I love fairy tales

BQ, no. I have limited room on my shelves. if it looked stupid, or wasn't my kind of book, or was by an author I didn't like, I wouldn't take it, even if it was free.

Any book from the Harry Potter series. It ALWAYS cheers me up and makes me happy! :D

BQ: Yes :) I might not read it, but I would definitely take it.
