What does a life sentence really mean?

In the state of Kentucky, I know someone who 21 years ago was given the sentence of 25 years to Life with a chance of parole after 12 years. Parole was denied and was told to serve out..... Does this mean that if still alive after 25 years then he will be released? I am just trying to understand somethings here.

Yes, that could be true since it is said that the rest of the 25 years should be served out. Life sentence would mean as it is, serving jail time for a very long time. There are way it could be granted to be shortened and etc. Rules depend on the place.

Depends on where you live. In some cases, it is automatically shortened for good behaviour. It seldom actually means life, as in the rest of the convicted person's life. There is usually a finite period, and within that time, there are options to shorten it with parole etc.

Life sentence means what it says life. depending on the crime they can or can not get parole and some are even in solitary confinement , but in your case that means he has 25 years and then parole
