Is it possible to "overfast" for a blood test?

I came into two different places after having fasted for 12 hours. Both refused to do the test because I had "fasted too long." I always thought that the ten hours mentioned on the lab order was a minimum and was proud that I had gone a little longer just to make sure.

No, they have to make sure you are hydrated enough; fasting too long can be as fasting not long enough.

If you are diabetic and you are checking your A1C level, the fasting part is for the cholesterol.

If the paper says 10-12 hours, you'd still be too long, but if the paper said 10 hours, that's how long you were supposed to wait.
