Atheists only Poll: What is your position on abortion?
Since many atheists answered my last question regarding the basis for their morality - as something akin to "do no harm to others" then, whether you are FOR abortion or AGAINST abortion, what is the basis for your position?
Are there "any" atheists who are against abortion here by chance?
There are atheists who oppose it you know. See here: http://goo.gl/lCypk
Thanks to all atheists who participate in my informal poll.

Pro-Choice.
There is no evidence that life begins at conception, it is merely a Christian teaching; therefore you can not impose it on other people.

I feel like I'm against abortion if you simply "don't want the kid" but there are circumstances where it's for the best (medically among other things)
Ultimately it is up to the individual. So whether I agree with it or not I think it's their right, their life, their decision.
And then I have to think I have never been in that position so I can't begin to try to understand someone else's reasons for having an abortion.

1. if the baby is aborted early, as it should be, it won't be painful, yes they're alive but so in a single cell organism, and they can't feel pain. Its a cluster of cells being removed before they're an actual person who can feel pain
2. the world is already overpopulated, we do not need more babies
3. people make mistakes, and its best for a kid not to be born into an unwanted home. A kid needs to be somewhere where they can get food, water, love, and proper care. Not just dumped into foster care. Its best to just not have a kid if they're not gonna be wanted
4. we can't made the decision for someone else. If a woman finds out they are pregnant, it is her decision to make. Its a hard decision but if they are not ready for a baby, you can't force her to carry a baby for 9 months and give birth when she doesn't want to or isn't ready. What if she was raped? What if she's just 15 and wont be able to offer the baby a good life, or even finish high school so that she can have a chance to go to college and get a job to support herself and possibly children in the future? What if the woman is sick or depressed? How will she be able to care for a baby when she still struggles to care for herself?
Anyway, its not our decision, its hers. No one things abortion is a good thing. People don't **** around with no protection then get abortions if they're unlucky. They aren't all bad irresponsible people. They're just people, and people make mistakes. Tell them not to all you want but they will make mistakes even if they do their best. Don't ruin their lives for it and the life of the kid who would just end up with no parents or parents who are not ready to care for them.

Indifferent. The issue doesn't affect me one way or another. It does seem rather callous to create and extinguish a life out of convenience and cognitive neuroscience is clear that it takes months after birth for a newborn to begin to develop sufficient cognitive abilities to be considered sentient. I'd be happy to weigh in on any individual case as to whether or not the circumstances seem justified, but a blanket statement that abortion is either always justified or is never justified just feels wrong to me.

Pro choice.
Let's tackle your '"do no harm to others" issue. Yes abortion IS killing but is it harm in the sense of suffering? No. As long as an abortion is early. The foetus hasn't developed a complex brain therefore it isn't meaningfully conscious any more than a plant is conscious. In other words it isn't a 'being' yes it is human but not a human being without a mind. Only a mind can suffer & only suffering is harm.

I'm actually a Christian, but I'm not going to talk about my religious views.
I'm against it because I believe that everyone deserves a choice. The mother has a choice, but does the baby?
Sure, some people will say that the baby is technically not alive. Okay, sure. But if you didn't abort it, there could be life.
Obviously, there are circumstances when "no" isn't the only answer. But getting rid of the baby because you made a poor choice to get in bed, when you KNEW the possible consequences?

Woman's choice. I don't have any say in the matter. Not gonna force a girl to cultivate a lifeform in her body, going through the entire pregnancy, and then force her to put her life at risk during childbirth because *I* feel like she's doing something bad.
(I say whilst I throw away chickens bones, simultaneously trodding on multiple insects and deploying a rat-trap).
Wierd, wierd, wiiiiiierd point of view.
Pro choice. For ever and ever and ever.

Pro giving ADULTS their own freedom to make moral choices and solve their own moral dilemmas without government interference. I have no idea what moral relevance the unborn have that is not provided by the mother.

a million. Orthodox Jew 2. for my section, abortion should not be practiced, with the aid of fact existence is taken remote from that little one. for people who do no longer go with a newborn, i think of it may be prefered to grant the newborn to between the various people who're no longer in a position to have babies, or who go with babies, somewhat that kill it. 3. i think of that comparable - intercourse marriages could properly be very risky to society, and could influence even heterosexual babies that are transforming into up around them, to no longer point out the non secular prohibition in contact. however the troublesome question is, are those human beings to stay lonely, single, and unfulfilled continually? And that's human nature to wish something that we can't have, and isn't any longer customary, so this could pop out in violent risky action on the part of the gay guy or woman. 4. Public colleges could desire to cater to all religions and admire their ideals. that's unfair for an atheist to could desire to learn and be examined approximately sensible layout, with the aid of fact that's no longer in accordance with their ideals, and the comparable for non secular human beings. i think of that the excellent subject could be to modern-day distinctive comments without saying that a undeniable one is right, alongside with, "Atheists have confidence so-and-so, Jews have confidence so-and-so"....et cetera. Then they could could desire to recognize what each and each faith believes, without asserting the correctness of any of them, on an identical time as retaining their very own ideals .

I am pro-choice. We as people have control of our bodies. You cannot force me to donate blood, or donate a kidney for any reason. You also cannot force me to do anything with my uterus I don't want to do. Even if you define personhood as beginning at conception, a person is not legally allowed to use my body in any way without my consent.
