Hey,
Type their email in the Search bar where you can search for names as well. If their profile doesn't appear when you finished typing the email, they most likely do not have a Facebook, or it's not listed under that email.

Yes you can find a friend with an email address if they use that email address for facebook.You can import friends from gmail,yahoo mail,windows live.
