Do theists understand the difference?

Between NOT believing a god exists (atheism) and BELIEVING god does NOT exist?

This is why atheism is NOT a belief or a faith or a religion. Because of this difference right here.

Update:

Milkman Joe, no... it is not the same, if atheism were a belief of disbelief, by that logic, the normal, common lack of belief anyone has about Godzilla's existence would ALSO be a belief.

Update 2:

Milkman Joe, a) Theist... belief in a god... Therefore the "a" for atheist means without the conditions to be a theist, THEREFORE a LACK of belief in a god. Atheist =/= BELIEF that god does not exist.

b)" In a nutshell, you either believe in God, or you believe in science and facts." This is a false dichotomy. There are theists who believe both in God AND Science (which is ok, because science makes no claim on the existence or inexistence of god, therefore, it is not contradictory to believe in God and science simultaneously. Also, you can have atheists that don't believe in science either.

c) "Everyone believes in something". An atheist can believe whatever he wants, regardless of how delirious it is, if the still lacks a belief in god, he remains an atheist. I do hope this isn't a silly attempt to say atheists don't believe in anything.

d) "The standard definition of the word "believe" is to accept something and be sure that

Pixie is imaginary... this is why I am an apixieist.

God is imaginary... this is why I am an atheist.

I could go on a lot more but I can't be bothered...

I can't believe I'm giving this so much time.

There isn't a difference. Atheism is where you don't believe in God or that God doesn't exist; the sentences are simply rephrased and are not in the least dissimilar.

EDIT: Atheism IS a belief, essentially. It is the belief that there is no God.

EDIT#2: Because religious people have created the belief that there is a God, it us up to people to become either an atheist or a theist. In a nutshell, you either believe in God, or you believe in science and facts. Everyone believes in something. The standard definition of the word "believe" is to accept something and be sure that said something is true. If you don't believe in anything, you're either ignorant or too unintelligent to know what to believe in. Atheism IS a belief because A) we believe that God doesn't exist and B) we believe in science, facts, evolution etc.

Atheism is not belief in the absence of god,it is absence of belief in god.

Such a word called atheism wouldn't exist if theists do not go about claiming that there is an invisible daddy sitting in the sky and watching you masturbate,if the word theism did not exist.

Atheism is not a claim, its a counter claim.
