Is my ankle sprained or broken?
I hurt my ankle playing basketball on thursday night and it swelled up so much that it looked like their was a tennis ball in my foot. I went to the ER and they said it was just a bad sprain and they gave me crutches and an air cast. However, I have sprained my ankle many times before and it has never hurt this much. My whole foot is swollen and I can hardly move it without being in pain. My foot is all bruised up and it does not seem like icing it helps. I have an appointment with an orthopedic doctor on monday, should I wait for that or go back to the hospital. My ankle is in a good amount of pain.

Yes You need an X-ray! ..It sounds to me you may have fractured something..Put a Double turbigrip to support Limb keep elevated..Icing only reduces the swelling temporarily!
Ring the Hospital /ER ask if it can be X-rayed if you are worried but they may do it when you see the Doc ..ER don't always X-ray to save money.. Costly..
Take anti-inflammatory meds Nurofen Plus 4 hourly. They wont put a Plaster on anything that is swollen so normally a back-slab is put on for comfort in the UK ..you need to imobolize it anyhow..use crutches NON WEIGHT BARING. Go to the Fracture Clinic see the Orthopaedic bods ... If you have an appointment they themselves are obviously not sure if you have broken it?
If you are in constant PAIN something is up! >

Go to the hospital and get an x-ray. It could just be a very bad sprain but its better to be safe than sorry!
Hope you feel better soon :)
