It's a sci-fi western. It does possess some Fantasy elements, but it rests more in the former genre. You should give it a try, and rent the earliest editions you can find. Do NOT buy or watch the blu rays, they have been altered way too much by George Lucas. Either find original dvds or the vhs copies if you have a VCR.

The best way to watch them is chronologically- 4, 5, 6, 1, 2 and 3.

Star Wars is a classic and is one of those films that when people hear you have never watched it they are really surprised.

I urge you to watch it, start with 4, 5 and 6 first. The prequels are not really worth watching but I would watch them at least once because they are still Star Wars and you can understand why the fans feel the way they feel for the prequels.

As the first person who answered said, look for the DVD or VHS of the films, Lucas added so much unnecessary changes to the movies.

Since you like Lord of the Rings, which is Sci-Fi Fantasy and has adventure in it, I think you'll like Star Wars since it's Sci-Fi Adventure and has fantasy elements too. They're definitely shorter but really exciting and have some of the most memorable scenes, lines and characters in cinema history. Plus, Star Wars was visually a stepping milestone in movie history, the effects were revolutionary for its time and still holds up to this day.

It's definitely worth a watch and it would be fun if you watched it with your friends since they really want you to watch the movies in the first place. :)

They are AWESOME. They are much more fantasy than standard sci-fi. I love The Lord of the Rings and also a huge fan of Star Wars. They are my two favorite series.

And don't listen to the other answers, WATCH THE BLU-RAY VERSIONS OF THE MOVIES. They are the best versions no matter what anyone else says. And watch them as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. That's the most fulfilling way to watch them.

The original Star Wars was awesome, the 1st "improved version" was really good (not much was altered in it) after that it went quickly down hill. The second and third installment (technically episode 5 & 6 ) are the same way-the first version is awesome, the 1st "improved versions" were really good, and the rest were done for the money. I love the TLOTR, too, and I love Star Wars-but only the originals and first "improveds"
