Scientists currently studying time travel? (This is not a joke!)?
I'm currently working on a high school science project about time travel. My teacher requires me to find some sort of adult mentor who can help me with this project. How can I find a scientist who is currently researching theoretical time travel? I tried calling NASA and there's nobody currently studying it that they could think of. They said maybe somebody at a college was, but they were unsure. Google has also failed me. Does anybody have any ideas about how I could contact somebody working on time travel?
Thanks

There is a resource at arxiv.org, where peer-reviewed papers get published. Searching on time travel, I get the following hits that seem promising:
http://arxiv.org/abs/1107.5650
http://arxiv.org/abs/1107.0144
http://arxiv.org/abs/1106.5609 ... and stopped looking here.
... you will have to pick and choose as you go through the full list.
To keep from getting no response, please make sure you are clear and concise as to what you are looking for. Be sure to thank them. And do not continue to pester.
As your other responders have said, time travel per se is a career ender. We are stuck traveling second-by-second into the future.

Ronald Mallett is a theoretical physicist who thinks time travel might be possible with lasers. He got hooked on the idea when his dad died though and he wants to be able to go back and save him. So there's probably a good bit of emotion clouding his judgement..... All of his research has been a dead end though. Other than him though no self respecting scientists are currently "studying time travel". About the closest thing to that would be theoretical physicists who ponder the paradoxes and things like that. Usually this is pretty much just done for some documentary on the Science Channel or something.... All the theories on the matter pretty much lead to the conclusion that time travel is impossible.(period) Except for forwards, which we are all doing literally every moment of every day. The closest thing likely possible to "time travel" is time dilation. But this only lets you kinda "skip ahead", with no chance of going back.

Your mistake might be that you're specifically looking for a scientist that is actively studying time travel. The current issue with time travel is that most of the methods that have been found to make it possible defy most of the current laws of physics.
What you really need to find is a theoretical physicist. You don't necessarily need someone who is actively studying time travel, you need someone who knows enough about it guide your research.
Try going to the colleges in your area and talking to the professors in the science department, specifically the physics department since that's the area that time travel would fall under. You will most likely find your mentor there.

Given that your teacher has assigned this project, I would present your teacher with your current state of progress, which is none. If your teacher still insists you attempt to find a mentor for said project, continue with your attempts but keep a log of the time spent along with details of of efforts. Most likely you'll be unable to find anyone willing to accept the role your teacher thinks is possible.
Any scientist who is working in said field would probably not have the time to take on that role. Despite failing to find a mentor you should hopefully be able to present your teacher with valid proof of the reasons for that failure. Regarding NASA, even if they were spending public money on research into time travel, it's likely they would not care to reveal it. Few reputable colleges would even consider allowing post graduates to spend time doing any research into time travel, regarding it as a waste of time and effort.
If you must persist with this project despite the lack of a mentor, do as much research as you can an collate your findings with as much organization as possible. Your best efforts should be recognized if your teacher is at all creditable.
Good Luck.

Time travel is awesome...and would be even more awesome the day it truly is rediscovered.
Yes rediscovered....because someone else has done it already. But they are not here with us anymore on earth. oops, should have not said that! oh well, what's done is done. So what?!?! We are not the only race to inhabit the earth! The world is too old to be for us only. There were other previous races of man who have reached the ultimate level of advancement...and they lived right here on earth. oops, said that too! oh well. thumb me down, I don't care....really, I don't LOL!

True time travel theoretically, for me, would involve a force field surrounding yourself, which is created by an apparatus which can create a force field. Yeah! Right! okay...that's neat. I am sober.
anything in science today creates force fields? magnetism has it's own sort of natural force field. If the magnetic field were to be great enough, and I mean really great. beyond any measure of magnetic force field that exists created by man today, then it might be possible to create a real force field that cuts you off from local space\time physics.
..........But of course there is someone I know of who actually did create such technology, using magnets, that indeed generated a force field. That force field was so strong that it lifted the apparatus off it's platform, moved objects a distance away in the yard, some of which were heavy pieces of granite slab.
the usual answer for 'time travel' from most is to travel at high speed towards the light speed barrier. This is basic proof of time slowing down relative to velocity. It's only symptom of what is happening. It is a proof of something happening, but not the ultimatum of time travel. There is more to do....
time and space are interwoven. dimensions: one, two, three, four (time being the fourth). Dimensions are like saying geometry (2 dimensional or 3 dimensional plus the time dimension). Geometry complexity relates to frequency. frequency therefore can affect time and space locally.
Vibrate (frequency) your magnets fast enough using geometry relating to space and time, and something truly wonderous occurs. A force field is created. and yes, you don't have to travel at light speed, you can stand still in this field....then move through time.
Magnetism being a most natural force of the universe of course, that is why it MUST be used.
This knowledge is hard to come by, hard to swallow (for some), but has been available for a long time. this stuff ties right into space/time intimately so.
Time travel being a direct side effect of using said technology. so you have propulsion as well as time travel all in one unique package.
Still interested? It's out there on the web...the source of this knowledge. been out there for some time. It might look funny to you, but it is quite interesting actually.

No, in fact telling people that you are studying time travel is pretty much a career ender if you're a scientist.
You can look for cosmologists studying the efffects of frame dragging, which is as close as you're going to get to time travel.
However there is a scientist who is popularly known as trying to make an effect precede a cause by trying to get lasers to cause frame dragging:

There is this Black Physicist (yes there IS such a thing) who is really big in this field---I saw him on TV quite a few times on that Morgan Freeman Universe show for one. Unfortunately, I cannot remember his name. He is developing Laser systems that twist light in an effort to distort time.
Spontaneous occurrences of people momentarily going into other times for a short period have been recorded--there ARE books of these reports out there. These may be due to natural space time distortions that happen from time to time in various localities. This DOES suggest that there may indeed be "shortcuts" into time travel that do not involve star sized masses or near light speeds.

I'm not trying to knock down your interest. That's the last thing I would want to do. But do you think you might want to try something that's a bit more established? Bose-Einstein Condensates are just as weird and there are real world experiments being done on that. I had a physics professor named Cass Sacket who might fix you up.

Imagine that the "vacuum" of space contains an ocean of energy. When objects or energies travel through space, they encounter resistance. One way to envision this is by using a Michael Phelps as an analogy. Phelps swims as fast as he can through the ocean, but he has to endure resistance from the ocean waves and the water itself. His limit is light speed, which is the limit for energy in normal space. Now imagine that Phelps is a Surfer, rather than a Swimmer. He goes along with the flow of the waves, riding upon them. He no longer encounters resistance from the ocean, it propels him along just nicely, without friction. Now as long as he has a power source on his surfboard, (like an engine), and it does not interfere with the ocean waves, he can exceed light speed. Going with the grain, rather than against it, he can surpass the fastest speed known.
Even light encounters buffeting resistance from the "quantum foam" of space. When consciousness guides energy flow, it can circumvent resistance by becoming one with this energy and one with the fabric of space-time. Consciousness is equipped with the apparatus necessary to merge with the fabric; it can mirror its surroundings, anticipate alterations in flow, and change direction in order to go with the flow.
Once one merges with the flow of the fabric of space-time, one can exceed the light speed barrier. When energy smoothly melds with space-time, relaxing into it, energy and information can travel instantly from place to place. Quantum entanglement is the result of energy melding with space-time. Psychic powers, in the form of precognition, are the result of energy melding with the fabric of space-time. People who are young have a greater connection in general to the fabric of space-time, thus they naturally more psychic and apt to experience synchronicities (coincidences). As one ages, examples of coincidences for the majority of people become less frequent. This explains "old skeptics".
Once one exceeds light speed, going superluminal, time travel is feasible. A machine would simply have to completely meld with the fabric of space-time, immersing itself in it. Inner and outer environment would have to be in agreement, a time machine would merge with it's environment. Such a machine would fundamentally "go with the flow".
Connect intimately with the fabric of space-time, and you will enable time travel. Getting energy to align with the fabric of space-time is the key.
