Where did the word "indie" come from as in "indie rock"?

    It is short for "independent." This is not a very good descriptor for the genre, but the idea is that indie rock does not follow the advice of focus groups and marketing execs to produce ordinary cookie-cutter radio pop. Indie rock artists, in theory, are devoted to the music, and not to the money or lifestyle.

    It is slang for Indiana. I think it is also the name of a rock band from Indiana.
