Some Dogs Are Too Stupid To Train...What Do You Think?
Last weekend my husband and I went over to a friend's house and were greeted by a totally different dog than what we saw last time. We asked them what happened to the other dog and they said they rehomed him because he was "too stupid to train". Based on what you just read, you must think that they are bad dog owners, but trust me, they are not...at least they treat their current two dogs like royals. They even built a dog house for them, and feed them the best foods, and giving them lots of attention. Heck, the wife even takes them shopping. She showed us a trick taking out her purse and one of the dogs immediately hopped in. Any who, they explained more about the "too stupid to train" theory. Bringing a dog into the family is a life time commitment, therefore you need to find the perfect family dog. Within the first two weeks, if they show no signs of improvement in their basic potty training, then that dog is beyond saving and needs to find a new home. They say the dog needs to be given back to its previous owner or to a new owner before the dog becomes attached, or before we become attached to it. Whats so fun about living with a dog for 10+ years that are clueless about potty training? The owners will begin to despise the dog, and the dog will sense it and both parties will be unhappy. So two weeks is the testing period to see if they are a perfect match. He said the previous dog that they rehomed could not potty train despite them spending a great amount of time and effort trying to train him, and he was too calm and wasnt playful despite them trying to initiate activity. They are now totally happy with their new dog. They are attached to the dog and vice versa. I can totally see it. I asked them how they trained their dogs and their reply "we didnt train him, thats just the way he is". How about potty training? "we just leave the pad out and they can smell the scent and pee on their without going in the house". Seriously, I can picture an imaginary halo over their heads. My 2 dogs compared to theirs is like 2 wackos. We both dont crate our dogs unless its night time, or if we have to go somewhere. That is to eliminate the risk of them wrecking the house. My dogs prefer the crate at night anyways. I dont understand how their dogs can be so angelic, very calm when guests are over and sitting on the couch peeking over at us, whereas mine acts like two crazies always running top speed around the house like 2 horses in a race. I cant even catch up to them unless they stop or slow down. They will not stop even when I call their name. Our friends say that a smart dog or most dogs in general will not pee in their crate, unless they havent been taken out for a long number of hours. Well, my dogs cant even hold it for 2 hours. I went to the store and had to crate them, and came home two hours later to see that they had peed in their crate...well one of them did. I just shook my head and cleaned their crate in silent agony. Based on what my friend told us, it got me to thinking "Are my dogs really too stupid train?" Is their such thing? I am a stay at home mom and have tried to potty train them with the puppy pad but they will not go anywhere near the pads. I took them to the vet and everythign is fine with them, so why cant they hold their bladders for even 2 hours when I'm away? We used to put the blame on us whenever they do something wrong such as "maybe cuz we're not giving them enough time" or "oh it was just an accident" when in fact those "accidents" happen everyday, despite us waking up 5 am every morning to take them out followed by every 2-3 hours afterwards. What more can we do for them? Are they beyond saving? Everyday I clean up their mess like a robot, I dont even feel angry enough, I'm just like "whatever". I sure hope they could become like my friend's dogs so I could enjoy being around them more. So please tell me, when the owners have REALLY done all that they could think of, time, devotion, care, and the dog still messes up every single day, what the heck is wrong with the dog? Considering they have no health issues?
What if the owners have spend a great amount of time on trainign them the basic potty training, like a month and they still will not improve? Isnt there a certain time line that they should be trained by? What if the dog still cannot potty train after a year?
AOHNA - You could have chosen not to read this if it was too much for you.
Wow - why is it so hard to post a question about dogs nowadays without being thrown tomatoes at? I'm just simply stating back what my friend said and was asking for opinions of what others think about their theory. Geez, and no I am not lazy I take them out every 2-3 hours, also I heard a puppy that is 6 months old should be able to hold their bladder for 6 hours, so if I let them out every 2-3 hours it shouldnt even be a problem, yet they always pee half an hour later after I just took them out, thats why I use puppy pads, if they need to go before the next time I take them out, they can pee on the pad. The pads doesnt substitute for letting them out. You people need to learn how to chill when it comes to dogs, geez.
Now I know to never ask on yahooanswers again because most of you just like to lash at people. I'm sorry, but not everyone is an expert at training dogs like you are.

It's stupid owners that make a stupid dog because most owners think that they know how to train a dog. First off all it takes more then 2 weeks or 1 month to potty train a dog. I can take 6 months to a year. Second of all they potty pads are the worse thing that you can use to train, throw them out and stop being lazy and take the dog out like you should be. Go and take obedience classes too. It will teach you a lot about how a dog learns. They don't learn like humans do and they don't outgrow things either.

No dog is too stupid to train. The problem is most people don't have the patience to train them-they think the dog will learn after being taught once, or practicing the command a few times/being taken out a few times. Dog learns with repetition. Some dogs take longer to learn then others do-but it also depends on the owner.
The issue with your dogs? You're training them to go inside-anywhere inside- by using pee pads. The crate might also be too big-it's suppose to be big enough for the dog to stand up, turn around and lay down in. Depending on their age-they need to be taken out; every thirty minutes(if under 6 months) or every hour-two hours(if over six months). They also need to be taken out, immediately in the morning, before/after meals, after they play, after they nap and right before bed. Make sure you're cleaning any accidents with cleaner made for cleaning up animal urine.
ADD: Dogs can take up to a year to be fully house-trained. How much time depends on the individual dog and again the commitment the owner puts into training/taking the dog out.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aMON7
A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

The dogs aren't stupid, the owners are.
Sounds like you guys have small dogs, depending on the breed they can be more stubborn. Two weeks isn't enough depending on the dog, especially if the owners don't know what they're doing. Have you tried taking them to training classes? Are the crates the proper size? How long do you let them out?

"Some Dogs Are Too Stupid To Train...What Do You Think?" No, but some people are too ignorant to know how to train.
Any dog can be trained, the human just has to find the method that works for the dog. Some people just don't bother to learn how, then blames the dog.
"so if I let them out every 2-3 hours " See? Right there is a problem! You don't let a dog out, you take them out and walk the, Right there is one example of what i was talking about. A pup, even a 6 month old pup doesn't know why he is being put out unless the human is right there to let the dog know they did what was expected. Let 'em out? they think it is playtime!
There are training classes, online sites and good training books. Too many recourses not to be able to find out what you are doing wrong. You asked a question, sorry, we thought you wanted the truth. you didn't. okay. here is what you wanted
Ignore all the answers, even mine so far. Training does not work. You have been doing everything correctly and it is the dogs fault. Somehow you got that one dog too stupid to read your mind and know what it is you want him to do.

Have you ever heard of paragraphs?
To answer your question, NO.
Some dogs are more difficult to train than others...
And to your "additional edit"
Then YOU are obviously doing something wrong, not the dog.

Oh I remember that cartoon! God I miss the good ol' 90s. I don't remember which one seemed stupider, but I'll go with the grey shaggy-haired one that always had his eyes covered with his fur, and the purple nose. __________________________________ EDIT: Okay, I remember now. The little orange one was the one who always seemed smarter than the bigger grey one, but in the end of each episode, he ended up looking stupid, lol THE LITTLE ORANGE ONE!

nope
no dog is "too stupid"
its just a matter of being patient, and finding a method that works for a particular dog
