Can Milk Thistle make symptoms worse before better?

I started on Milk Thistle yesterday for my persistent sugar cravings, acne, and nasty pms. Today I have been craving (and indulging in) sugar and chocolate like crazy. And now I feel a low grade burn in my back, like my liver is a achy or indigestion etc. Is that normal for day 1? Does this mean its working? Or am I just achy because I had two large chocolate bars, a third a loaf of white bread and half a bag of cherry licorice? Oh, and some marshmallows. How long til the milk Thistle makes my sugar cravings go away?

I'm a nurse and never heard of Milk Thistle being used for sugar cravings and all the things you listed as your reasons for taking it. It is not used for this ever as far as I know. It's used to help protect the liver and has no side effects as far as I know. You shouldn't be taking it for the reasons you listed. No, it is not working on your acne, sugar cravings and nasty pms. That's just crazy nonsense and don't know who told you this wrong info.

I really don't know what you mean by "achy", but all that crap you ate should not cause your bones to ache if that is what you are referring to with "achy." The most it would do is give you a big sugar high for awhile and maybe give you an upset stomach because you are eating like some kid with a lot of money who goes to the fair and goes crazy on eating. You really need to control your own food cravings and act responsibly about your eating habits without taking herbs or drugs to try and control things. You should also educate yourself about anything you put in your mouth when it comes to pills, vitamins, herbs, etc.

I have no idea where you got the idea that milk thistle is useful in treating any of those. I've never heard of any evidence to show that it is.

Sugar has been found to be very addictive, just like a drug. If you want to reduce your sugar cravings, then you need to treat it like any other addiction: gradually cut back or try to eliminate it entirely. You should note that white "enriched" flour is practically the same thing as sugar. If you want your sugar cravings to go away then start reducing how much sugar you are consuming. The less you consume, the less you will crave it in the future. You should also avoid artificial sweeteners entirely; they have been found to increase your sugar cravings while also not satisfying those cravings at all. If you have cravings, you can sate them by eating fruit, which is much better in every way than refined sugar. Eat lots of fiber and drink lots of water.

There is some evidence that sugar is linked to acne and worsened PMS, so cutting back on your sugar consumption can actually help you with all three of the problems you mentioned!

Silybum shouldn't cause anything like that. It helps detoxification of the liver and protects the liver. It's the only proven herb to protect against liver damage from herpatitis C and deadly mushroom ingestion.

You cannot take silybum and then expect to be better, when you're eating loads of refined carbs, you can't expect it to get rid of sugar cravings, usually doesn't work like that. It's meant to be taken daily for liver support, which MAY help with sugar cravings. But there are also other herbal medicines you can take for blood sugar regulation and hormonal issues. There is no magical cure - you will need to see a qualified Naturopath. This isn't a DIY job. You have a number of issues going on

Milk thistle doesn't get rid of sugar cravings, you need chromium or brewer's yeast for that. You probably feel horrible because of all the junk you ate today. Sugar is a drug, you are going to have strong cravings and withdrawal when you stop eating it. You need to just work your way through it

Your acne and 'nasty pms' is likely related to severe hormone fluctuations. Milk thistle doesn't help those either, it's just a liver support. You just need to avoid sugar, get enough sleep, exercise daily, and eat properly

You're just getting sugar/carb cravings. It has nothing to do with the Milk Thistle.

Your liver is not in your back.

Yes it can cause problems! Why do people believe that all from the earth must be harmless?

    Oh, now I remember.
