Planting Indoor Flowers That Will Last?
The indoor lobby of my Condo building has a small planter filled with plastic flowers that are old, faded and quite frankly, nasty looking. I'm sure nobody would object if I dumped the plastic and filled the planter with potting soil and real flowers. Is there anything I can use that will last more than a few months? I don't want to have to make a monthly trip to a nursery to get new flowers.
The lobby is South facing, and gets full sunlight. It's also climate controlled.

First make sure the planter holds water and will not leak onto the lobby floor. The inside side walls must be waterproofed first to prevent exterior wall molding. Place a few inches of drain rock on the bottom, a layer of filter cloth, then add a light weight soil.
My first choice in plants is a Zebra plant. Does very well indoors.

Second choice is a Tricolor bromelaid. The foliage provides color.

It depends if the lobby gets enough light for flowers and most flowering plants only have blooms for a short time. If there is enough sun you good plant marigolds http://tinyurl.com/nkmyb2h which keep going all summer and into the fall. If the light is low you could plant impatiens which will also keep going until fall. http://tinyurl.com/pw9w3xr Any flowering plant will need to be deadheaded occasionally to keep it going. Just trim off the spent blooms so it will bloom again.

it extremely is troublesome to get very colourful indoor vegetation, yet once you have lots of light, you have some selections: Begonia (rex or wax leaf) Miniature rose Peace lily (does not bloom oftentimes) African violets Schlumbergera
