    Is Mysticism Blasphemous?

    ~~~ Mysticism is to religion what actually being a parent is to little children playing with dolls making 'believe'!
    Mysticism is about personal experience, Union, with God!
    We are One!
    Is it wrong to try to understand God and nature? What if you are humble towards God?
    ~~~ Mysticism is not about 'understanding' anything, intellectually.

    It is about the experience of what the 'religious' can only idly and vainly fantasize about!

    It is Knowing God, as opposed to 'believing in' God!

    Knowledge is experience!

    That is why I eschew ignorant 'believers' trying to vainly share their idle vain imaginings!

    A great Xtian mystic spoke truly that in the 'future', there will be no Xtians (or other (divisive/insane) religions)! We will all be mystics (inclusive in Love), or we will not be!

    Read some Meister Eckhart!

    Read Rumi!

    It doesn't matter the initial religious tradition of the mystic, Islam, Xtian... because the end result is always the same, One, all inclusive, in Love!

    Anything other than Love, is sinsanity!

    Hi!

    I'm curious as to how you got the idea that mysticism is blasphemous.

    It is definitely not wrong to want to understand both God and His creation (nature); however, problems can arise depending on how you try to study Him.

    I have read a number of the writings of ancient Christian mystics, such as Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, and Jakob Boehme, and was very inspired to try to have the same experiences and closeness to God that they had.

    But over time, I began to realize that mysticism essentially is a "technique" to try to draw close to God; it is a "program" of sorts, involving going thru various levels and steps to attain to greater states of abandonment to God, etc.

    These people used a lot of practices and disciplines, such as extreme fasting, mortification of the body, extreme poverty, denial of their basic needs, enforced isolation, and constant prayer and devotion-in short, an asceticism that in fact couldn't help making a person very spiritually proud, since they are so humble!

    Of course, humility before God is very good, but my point is that we cannot be trying to get to the Lord by our own striving; any "acts" that we do cannot please Him, because the only things we do that please Him are the things that He actually does through us. He is the author and finisher of our faith, and we are totally dependent on Him to lead and guide us into the perfection of Christ.

    And that "humility" can only be the fruit of having gotten in touch with the truth of your sinful nature and realized what you really deserve, but then experienced His mercy instead.

    So, giving you the benefit of my experience, I would say, rather than try to look into mysticism itself, just take some long periods of time out to just sit quietly before God, waiting on Him, being open and available.

    One time, after doing that, I found myself hearing His thoughts towards a couple that are friends of mine, and they were beautiful, gushing thoughts of love! I knew it had to be him, cuz I didn't love them that much!

    Source(s): If you want to read a general study of it, read Evelyn Underhill"s "Mysticism- a study in nature and development of spiritual consciousness", which is available free on christian classics ethereal library.

    I suppose it is but it kind of depends. Blasphemy is a matter of opinion, so if you're taking a mystical view of a certain religions: for example, islam and sufism... a sunni imam might see you as a blasphemer. You could say that mysticism is in a league of it's own. Blasphemy is really just a word that people of certain religions use to say you don't follow our beliefs conventionally and for that reason you're an outcast of sorts.

    According to the Bible, if you are speaking out against the Holy Spirit, you are committing blasphemy. Blasphemy laws have been used throughout history to keep people in check. It is not unique to the Christian religion.

    There is nothing wrong with trying to understand things. Please try to understand that this way of thinking is a form of slavery.
