Prius is much better in terms of gas. Have to adjust driving habits a bit to maximize mileage.

Both are great choices but the Prius will return better fuel economy. All Prii versions are 5-seaters but 4 is more comfortable: the back seat can be a little snug for 3. If you do routinely carry 5 people, the Camry would be more comfortable--it is a bit wider.

All versions of the Prius are very nice cars. They have lots of features, nice driving characteristics and cutting-edge styling. With some research and practice, you can experience better fuel economy than the EPA estimates. Averaging 60+ mpg with a Prius is not at all out of the question.

I'm a big fan of the Prius hatchback design. It lets you fit larger items inside that wouldn't fit inside a sedan, like the Camry. If you have the desire to carry bikes, dogs, small furniture items, musical instruments, etc, the Prius works really well for this.

My first thoughts are both cars are expensive for a first time driver with little driving experience. The prius is a 4 passenger car with a liftback and the rear seat can be folded down for more storage. The prius gets better mpg than the camry. Both are good cars able to go into high mileage. If you feel inclined to go hybrid technology buy the hybrid. You were not specific about if the camry is a hybrid or no. The camry is a nice comfortable riding car with a large trunk. I own a 2006 prius and notice the gas guzzling rvs driving around me having no worries about mpgs.
