Well, if the gun is marked "J Stevens Arms Co" with the Chicopee Falls address, it was probably made before WWII. Most post-war "Stevens" guns were marked 'Savage' somewhere. And of course Savage moved away from Chicopee Falls around 1960.

All the guns made before 1968 had no serial number until the Gun Control Act of 68 required serial numbers. I have a buddy who knows a lot about this stuff & he said that this gun could be worth anywhere from $75-$200 depending on condition.

No real value, honestly. As the others have said, it's probably 40+ years old, and probably worth around $100 if it's in excellent condition. If it's in good condition, $70. In poor but serviceable condition, maybe $50. If it doesn't work, or is badly rusted, it might be worth $20 for someone who wants to plug the barrel with concrete, clean up the metal, and hang it on the wall as a decoration.

serial numbers were not required by law in the US before '68. Lot's of old break action shotguns and single shot 22's were sold without numbers on them.

Those little shotguns are worth $200 tops... Some limited collectors value...

The serial number answer is not complete. Yes the 1968 Gun Control Act has a provision requiring the stamping of serial numbers as a way to track guns. However the big gun makers like Remington, Winchester, Browning, Ithaca, etc had been stamping their product since the beginning, but for a different reason. They encoded the date of manufacture and when design and part changes were made. However many of the smaller makers did not SN their guns. Some of these were called "Hardware Guns" because they were lower priced guns sold in your local hardware store. For example the Wards Western Field, sold by the old Montgomery Wards (or as my dad called them "Monkey Wards) was made by Mossburg.

It is just a cheap shotgun. Might be worth $50 in great condition.

yep, another dime store shotgun. the stevens name commands a little more than H&R
