Laptop Recovery deleted?

Hi, I have an old laptop (Acer 3100) and before someone gave it to me, they deleted the Vista OS and changed it back to xp, but they also deleted the recovery system for some reason, but anyway, the main thing is they somehow removed the cd rom feature and it does not work, so I bought a cd rom (EXTERNAL) so I could replace the xp with Unbuntu when xp is no longer available in 2014,

but the laptop will not recognize the external cd rom, is there a way around this, I dont want to just throw this loptop out? PS, the cd rom works on my desktop., Thanks

Update:

Zayad (the genius) I naturally already tried that!!

Darren I will try your usb method, I know it will probably work, but still wondering what i could do to get this cd rom working?

there a few ways around this and here's one! use another computer and have a USB stick handy, now pop the stick in your computer and format it! and download linuxliveusb and copy your distro using that software to your usb stick! :)
