Who killed Pablo Neruda and why?

It would seem that he didn't die of the cancer he was suffering from but was executed by the CIA as a favour to that tyrant, Pinochet, who went on to have thousands of Chileans executed. Really, is the fear of any political system worth the millions of Dollars spent and hundreds of thousands of people killed that America has responsibility for in its determination to defeat Socialism? No wonder the USA is as unpopular as it is.

Update:

Well, Tristan, his going into exile where he could have led or supported a resistance movement surely was reason enough to silence him and It would have been much easier to kill him before he left than risk assassinating him in a foreign country. Pinochet had the motive and the US the means. They are well-practised and unrepentant in clandestine killing as we all know.

I am in a minority of one in thinking that this was heart failure pure and simple. He was a popular and well thojught of public figure, but not enough for him to be killed and especially when he was going into exile. Why not do it when he is gone?
