Question for Christians about the bible?
My essential question is, do you actually believe EVERYTHING in the bible? Do you believe in evolution? If so, does that not deny the story of Adam and Eve, therefore faulting the entire book itself? Do you believe that the bible is the word of God, even though it was written by man? How can you put so much trust into a book written before civilization was even NEAR where we are at now?
@ Alex - That is ridiculous and uncalled for, I did not ask you about gay people, don't answer unless you're actually going to ANSWER the question.
@ Hope is Certainty - Well you didn't really answer the question either. I will gladly share my viewpoints if you would answer the questions provided. Over time we have proven vastly more intelligent than our predecessors, so yes I could make the argument that truth does come along with time. For example, we once thought the world was flat, and it was accepted as truth, until someone questioned it, and that was found to be false. In that case, like many others, the truth was found over time.
You see, it's rather funny to me to get peoples viewpoints, because they vary so much, just like the different sects of religious affiliation. Chi Girl says that it's fine to believe in evolution while the poster directly under her says that OBVIOUSLY you can't believe in evolution AND the bible. While some of you say that the stories in the old testaments are simply "Allegories" the other half say that EVERYTHING in the bible is true.
Also @Eli - I didn't say that civilization was non-existent in those days, I said that wasn't near where we're at now, so read before you reply. I realize there are many ways to define civilization, but to say that it hasn't advance almost exponentially is ridiculous.
@Max - No I am asking a legitimate question, I truly want to understand how people can believe everything in the bible and also accept evolution, or even how they can deny evolution at all when there are facts supporting it. Also, I didn't know this was against the rules, i've been doing it in my other questions as well.... But to answer your question about evolution and the story of Adam and Eve, If God created Adam & Eve, and they were the first humans, then how could the theory of evolution ever possibly be true?

I'm not a christian but, the bible is just a fictional fantasy fairytale book. Nothing in it is real. It is probably one of the most popular fantasy book series right now.

"do you actually believe EVERYTHING in the bible?"
Every last word of it.
"Do you believe in evolution?"
Absolutely not. God gave the goodly wings to the peacock, and feathers to the ostrich. Job 39:13 Adam and Eve is not an allegory, it was never written as such, and Jesus Himself mentions Abel.
"If so, does that not deny the story of Adam and Eve, therefore faulting the entire book itself? "
Yes, that is why you cant reconcile evolution with the Bible.
"Do you believe that the bible is the word of God, even though it was written by man?"
2nd Timothy 3:16 "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness."
I certainly do. Men under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost that is.
"How can you put so much trust into a book written before civilization was even NEAR where we are at now?"
The Bible is even more relevant today than yesterday. Everyday is another step closer to every last word being fulfilled.
Yes I believe the Bible. It is the rock on which all hammers of criticism have been broken.
@Veronica, Jesus is throughout the Old testament. He said so Himself.
John 5:46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.
Isaiah 9:6-7 For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of His government and peace
There will be no end,
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with judgment and justice
From that time forward, even forever.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.
That's not even scratching the surface.

Civilization may make advance technologically, but inwardly...spiritually, we are still the same. We war because we desire what our neighbor has. There is no way to return to the distant past and repeat, verify, or measure what happened. All theories are based upon conjecture and opinion. Evolution is change, but the sort of evolution it takes to bring two separate genera from one base genus has not been repeated, verified or measured. It is all conjecture and opinion.
Yes, man penned the Bible. Even if someone produced the tablets that God wrote the 10 Commandments on, how, or by whom they were written would likewise be subject to conjecture and opinion since nobody can return to the past to repeat, measure or verify what actually happened.
I trust that man, under the influence of the right conditions, can perform perfectly for a time. No man is perfect all of the time and I imagine that even those who wrote down the verses that we have as the Bible, were fallible sinners, just like everyone else. But even a broken clock is right two times a day. Get my drift?

1. Yes.
2. There are six types of evolution, five of them are purely religious.
3. The Bible was written on paper by many different men, not just a man, over time who document history and some who have received revelation from God.
4. Civilization was always around, if you didn't know. Technology is not the same as civilization. And I have reason to believe that pre-flood civilization was quite advanced.

The first ones, the only true Christians, the Gnostic's believed there were two gods just as the bible shows. There is the lord, who is jealous and vengeful. And God, who is loving and forgiving. These are opposites.
They believed that the Garden of Eden was a coming of age story just like all cultures have. The garden is our childhood home and the lord was our dad who was gone all day working and would show up with food like manna from heaven. This is why it says we cannot return to the paradise because it is our childhood. The true meaning of eating the fruit of the "Tree of Knowledge of good and evil" is when we learn right from wrong. Which we ARE SUPPOSED TO DO. It is the false prophets, starting with Saul, alias Paul the false apostle, who reversed the meaning of "original sin" from ignorance (which we are all truly born with) and created the doctrine of lies we know today.q34d

Yes, I believe EVERYTHING in the Bible as the Word of God.
Macro evolution is a FAIRY TALE. Even science books use the words "coould be", "might be", "thought to be".
Mitochondrial Eve proved that Eve was the ONE COMMON FEMALE ANCESTOR OF ALL and lived 6000 years ago once they used the correct mutation rates.
There are MANY, MANY things in the Bible written thousands of years ago that only God could have known.

Yes, i believe everything in the Bible. No, I don't believe in evolution. I believe the Bible is the word of God. It was God's word through man. Everything in the Bible is still relevant today even though it seems like so much has changed, people are still sinners.

In what way does evolution deny Adam and Eve? They are just two people. We know they weren't the only people because their son went off to another city to find a wife.
I can see by your "chatting" which is against the rules of Yahoo Answers, that you are not asking a valid question. You just want people to pick on.
The bible is full of stories. Stories of individuals. Many of those stories have been verified by archology. The stories still relate to us today. As a people we have not changed much. We are still full of joy and full of sorrow. Capable of great good and capable of great evil. The bible is also full of poetry. Poetry is neither true nor false.

people who believe everything in the bible are fundamentalists, and therefore wouldn't believe in evolution, obviously.
and fundamentalists have their own opinions, it seems a bit unfair to condescendingly say, 'how can you put so much trust in a book written before civilisation was even NEAR where we are at now?'
i have no belief in God and never have done, but for some people faith is extremely important to their life, and I can understand that.
who cares what people want to believe? if they don't put faith in science as a legitimate form of explaining things then what is a more legitimate alternative than a faith that has been around for thousands of years?
this is a silly question in my opinion.

Not all Christians are protestant reformers, The Eastern Orthodox church (the oldest Christian tradition) does not believe that the bible is the word of God. The bible is a product of the church, it was compiled over a period of time through ecumenical councils. Christianity in fact existed 300 years without the bible.in the eastern Orthodox tradition the bible is based on the church not the church on the bible. we read scripture in allegory to Christ reveled through the apostolic tradition (church fathers). outside the life of the church the bible is meaningless collection of ancient text. because it has no context. the bible is not a guide on how to be a good Christian, nor is it a theology book. the bible is a written "icon" of the life of the church. it points beyond itself towards Christ. the main use of scripture is Not doctrine but meditation and prayer.
As for evolution, again I am not a protestant, to the Orthodox evolution has nothing to do with adam and eve. the story of the fall is taken as allegorical to Christ. Christianity starts with Christ, the incarnate son of God who entered into the world in order to free the world from corruption and futility. it does not start with the fall narrative or the creation narrative. which are both read allegorically to Christ. there is a reason John 1 is similar to genesis. the true Creation is not in how the cosmos was caused into being but rather the creation is when all things reach there fulfillment and fruition in Christ the logos (word of God; eternal harmony). this is the spirit of God hovering over that waters of chaos and saying let their be light (genesis1:2) or when God blow his spirit into the clay shaped man making it a living soul. this is how the Orthodox read Scripture. in a meaningful poetic manner that reflects Christ. the son of God took on matter inorder to fulfill its true purpose.
