Should I use a colon, semicolon or something else?

How should I punctuate a sentence like this: "Since there was only a ten percent chance of rain, I decided to ride my bike; big mistake."

I think the way you have punctuated the sentence is right as far as its framing is concerned.

A semicolon can be used here, but I think I would use a period for a full stop. It would be more dramatic and make the reader pause before the final sentence. This would add a small amount of suspense.

I think it would sound more dramatic if you just put a period after bike.
