Sword art online.. Kirito?
PLEASE NO SPOILERS!
So.. I just began watching Sword Art Online because I have a lot of friends who love it and I wanted to see what it was about. First of all.. the animation is breathtaking.. they really did a nice job with it. I think the concept of it is interesting and fun and I liked how they incorporated certain gaming aspects to it but sometimes I feel like it goes a little bit TOO far because I'm not really a huge gamer nerd and I can't really related to all aspects.
The one thing that gets me though is.... Kirito. Good lord. I actually cannot stand him. I'm on episode.. 5?? I just finished the one with Pina and the flower and whatever. I think that was 4 or 5. So yeah.. it hasn't even been long at all and I just despise him and he's not getting any better! I think they got it WAY off with the whole brooding thing! They think making a brooding loner character will make the audience able to relate to him better but it doesn't work in this situation! I feel like they took it too far! He's grumpy ALL THE TIME.
An example of a character with REAL emotions that are relatable that I really really adore is Simon from Gurren Lagann. He's a fantastic character with fantastic character development. He's completely relatable and reacts to situations as any normal person would, he gets sad when bad things happen, he gets scared, he falls in love, he realizes himself.. all that stuff. I think he's a perfect balance of everything. Lots of different types of people can relate to him.
As for Kirito..... with his character type NOBODY.. or only a severely depressed select few can. Does he EVER change? Does anyone else have a problem with him? Please don't give any spoilers!
OMG!!! The funny thing is that I'm also currently watching Attack on Titan and it may possibly be my new favorite. It's absolutely gorgeous, everything about it. It's a classic in the making. I'm dying waiting for the next episodes to come out!
But yeah.. something about Kirito that I've noticed is his inconsistency, that's a good way to put it. He's a loner but has no trouble making friends... I think he's very close to being a Gary Stu if not completely full fledged..

Kirito, does not change his character. He pretty much stays a gary stu for the entire anime. A gary stu is a character found mostly in fanfiction, to describe a male character who is perfect, always does the right thing, is overpowered, and gets all the girls. He ends up breaking the game rules and is saved by deus ex machinas only because he is the main character, and that is not a good thing. Come the second arc, it gets even more ridiculous, as his character becomes more inconsistent. For example, in one moment, he will go Guts from Berserk on someone, and then act like he is someone's best friend for no reason at all. He claims to be anti-social and alone, yet he has no problem talking to people like he is someone's friend, or getting girls to fall in love with him. Overall, Kirito is only a self insert character, he only has a high amount of fans on MAL because he is easy for people project themselves as him.

He does change for the better (a bit too much in my personal opinion). I had a problem with it as well, since it seemed really cliche for such a lonely brooding character to be the way he is (especially in a game you're trapped in 24/7) and be popular with the female characters, but the rest of the series makes up for it. I'd encourage you to keep watching.

Kirito acts like a boss in the game SAO but when he's not in the game..he's just a loser.
Yeah he changes. He comes to realize it's not all about being "the best" player. Unfortunately, some stuff happens just so he can realize that.

are you being serious? You do realize Kirito isn't brooding but just a rather calm and collected person. not everyone has to be showing off how manly they are through explosions and screaming. In fact it's those characters who are so loud and proud all the time that are hard to relate to.

Its explained that when a cursor turns orange, then its ok to harm the player, when its red, then you can probably kill the player without a punishment given the circumstances to achieve a red cursor. Kuradeel gained a red cursor by killing Godfree
