How to tell if it's a date?

So, throughout the semester this guy would always ask how my day was or how i was doing when we would see each other in passing. I always thought he was nice and cute, but had a boyfriend at the time and was very much committed to him. Well after my boyfriend and I broke up I ran into this other guy in a bar and he said how he had thought I was always cute, but knew I had a boyfriend and didn't want to cross any boundaries. He also mentioned if I was ever in his town over the summer that we should hang out. So, we continued to talk all that night and flirted a little bit and exchanged numbers. We texted a little bit, but not a whole lot after that, saw each other at a party and talked there a little bit, but not a whole lot. Now that's it's summer we've talked a few times, but not much, but today when he texted me he asked what I was up to and when I said I was looking forward to going out of town soon he mentioned how I should come visit him. Well, coincidentally one of the places I'm visiting is where he lives, so he wants to basically spend a day together in the city and is willing to plan it all out, which I am all for. However, since we barely ever talk I don't know if I should consider this a date or just two people hanging out?
