water heater (electric) Problems?

Is it ok to use the water if my water heaters heating element burnt out, or will I be electrocuted?

Update:

Yesterday there was a big POP, then a little smell from the water heater, I went to get my husband (who was still sleeping) and he checked it out and said he couldn't smell anything. Since then my husband used the water and it is lukewarm, not completely cold, but I am afraid to use it. My husband is not a fix it type person.

It's grounded so is safe as it sets. Would be wise to flip off it's breaker in the panel then pull out the plug if there's one for it. Now look for a red reset button. If you see one, push it in then turn the power back on. It might of been tripped which cut off the power to the elements.

If you replace the element yourself, and it is not that hard to do, when you let the tank refill, make sure a faucet is open someplace in the house, so that no air gets in the tank. If you turn it back on after replacing the element, and there is air in the tank, the top element will immediately blow again.

if the element is burned out you wont have any hot water ! drain the water heater, pull out the burnt element, take it to the parts store get another one and put it in ! about $15.00 that way or $75.00 to $150.oo for a plumber or electrician

If the heating element is burned out, you will need a qualified repairman to fix the problem. That is one thing I would not mess with.

Just turn the breaker off or pull the fuse to be safe.
