I'm still confused on the Rukongai in Bleach? Anyone explain this to me?

Okay so when people die, their souls get a little number and they're sent to a random place. Okay.

But does that mean that their "soul" continues growing? I always thought that if a soul would die it stays as it is for all eternity. But the characters in Rukongai are aging? Is that legit? It should make sense and I should be figuring this out on my own but it somehow doesn't click.

Because Gin and Rangiku lived in Rukongai and grew up. I'm still hazy on how Rangiku just ended up somewhere in the middle of nowhere and Gin found her. Wouldn't she be sent to a district? There are so many holes to these backstories o_o

And if "souls" grow up then why is Hitsugaya so short? Is it because he died as a kid and can't grow anymore or is his body just like "screw it, I'm done growing!"...

Any information would help..I think I'm just getting caught up in the discrepancies or something..

Yes, souls do continue to grow in Soul Society regardless of one's spiritual power. They age a lot slower than humans though.

Note that Rukia was still a baby when Hisana (Byakuya's wife) left her in the streets of Rukongai 150 years prior to the start of the main storyline. Right now, she looks about the same age as Ichigo (who's 15 when the main storyline started). I'm not certain how much faster they age compared to humans, but it's interesting to note that Unohana is actually a lot older than Kyoraku and Ukitake, since she was one of the original founding members of the Gotei13 2,100 year prior to the main storyline. Kyoraku and Ukitake on the other hand were the first captains to graduate from the Shinigami Academy and a lot of time has passed since the founding of the Gotei13 by then. It could be assumed that they tend to age faster through childhood but they age much, much slower during adulthood. Heck, Unohana looks almost the same way she did more than 2,000 years ago!

As for Hitsugaya, well I think he's really just a bit short for his age, though he IS the youngest captain in the Gotei13. He's also a genius so he graduated from the shinigami academy and got promoted to captain in a very short span of time. I don't think he's stopped growing/aging already though. Momo who's a bit older then Hitsugaya, was actually a lot taller than him before he entered the academy.

So in the world of Bleach where souls can still die, I think it also makes sense that souls could also age. And yes, souls can also reproduce.... yes I know, it's weird...

No I never thought about that. There is a clear difference though the kid who never aged lived in the real world then when he died was transfered to the spirit world whereas renji and rukia didn't ever really live in the real world. Maybe if you were born in the soul society you age or just age very slowly. This might be supported vaguely in that arc about the princess who ichigo has to protect from assasination. I thought i remember them talking about generations of nobility.

They grew older because they had spiritual power that let them do things normal souls couldn't do. They kinda explain this with the need for soul reapers to eat. Normal souls didn't need food at all but they could eat as they did when alive if they could afford to. However Soul reapers need food to keep their spiritual powers strong. Just as they had a need for food Soul reapers or anyone with enough spiritual power could age. Keep in mind that even that they could age it took hundreds of years in their time for them to show any signs of aging.
