Gander Mountain and used guns?
I have a Remington model 870 20 gauge pump shotgun. Its in really good condition. I think im gonna take it to Gander Mountain tomorrow and see if i can sell/trade it for another gun. My questions are:
1) Do they usually pay well?
2) Should i trade?

Generally speaking- the rule of thumb for shops buying a gun or taking one in trade is that they try to give 1/2 the value that they believe is the minimum they can get for it.
If they think they can get $300 for your gun- then they will offer you $150. This is not a hard, fast rule...but about what it will be.
1) no
2) ? if you want to get rid of your gun, and they have something else you want? Then maybe you should trade -if you can live with the hit.
Its best to find out exactly what your gun is worth and know the value of the gun you want to buy. They will have to make a profit or they will not do the deal.
If what you want is $400, add tax- say 10% that makes $440
If your gun is worth $300 and they give offer you $150...then you need to have $290 to make the deal.
Thats just a general number for reference-
I do not have problem with trading guns- I have done it several times. Sometimes you can do real good. If you don't like a trade- you can always reject it.

1) I've never yet heard of any gun shop or pawn shop that gives anywhere close to the actual value of the gun. Typically 50%-70% of the private party value is what I've heard quoted.
2) Do you want a different gun? If so, trade... But you better bring cash with you. A Remington 870 can be had for about $300, brand new, all day long, so Gander Mountain will probably give you around $150 if yours is in good shape. Unless yours is something special, which I doubt. For $150, expect to buy a .22LR, if you're lucky.
Just some free advice: you're welcome to go ask them what they'd give you for the gun, but don't be surprised or disappointed when that value is way lower than you expect. $200 is probably high for what they'll offer. And when they offer you peanuts, go find someone who is willing to buy the gun in a private party sale, and see if you can't get $250 out of it.

Personally I would never trade or sell my guns to a pawn shop or a retail store that buys used guns. They buy WAY too low only to sell them for a price that's way over what the gun is worth. I collect WWII rifles and went to Gander Mountain to see their selection. They did have a fantastic selection BUT they were on average 200-300 above what the gun is worth. If you live in a state where private sales are legal like the one I live in, you'll get more for your money that way by far.

They may buy it used, for a fair price, but fair to who is the question.
They may give you some credit towards another gun, but either way do NOT expect much credit for a used firearm, especially if they sell that particular model new or used, unless it happens to be very rare or a limited edition.
Also if they do not need your gun, they won't offer you anything, if they have more than a few of them in stock and they have not moved during the past few months.

well gander mountain wants crazy prices for there used stuff, they might give you something fair, i wouldnt plan on it, its like trying to trade your old tv for a new one at wal mart, for how much you want for your old one they can get a new one from the manufacture, then they mark it up and make a nice profit, gandermountain has the worst prices on everything, i never seen something cheaper there than anywhere else, even when they have sales they are still overprices, i dont bother with them any more.

Gander Mountain is notoriously high when it comes to used prices. They are notoriously high on new prices. They are notoriously terrible when it comes to trade-in prices.
Gander Mountain is one of the biggest rip-offs when it come to gun sales you can find.
I would avoid it at all costs. The place flat-out sucks.

What you need to understand right off is that the offer they make you is one that will allow them to resale the gun and make money on it. You will likely get half (or less) of what the gun is really worth because they have to leave room for themselves to make a profit.
That being said you might be able to work out a decent deal on a trade.
