I got in trouble for pretending not to know Spanish. Was I in the wrong?

I live in a border city (Laredo, TX). People here dominantly speak Spanish. We also get a lot of people from Mexico. Ironically, on 4th of July, this happened. I hate dealing with certain people that are really stupid, ill-mannered, and rude. I pretended I didn't know Spanish. They didn't understand English. She asked to speak to the manager, and I got in trouble. I really wanted to be callous and say, this isn't Mexico (Yes, I'm 4th gen Mexican-American).

Is speaking Spanish a requirement for your job? If it is not a requirement then you shouldn't be punished.
