my dog ate onions????
so i left the kitchen for like literally 2 minutes to go to the nearby bathroom to wash my hands and when i come back, i see my dog eating on a hamburger and it had pieces of onions and i tried to take it but she would growl at me and so i figured why not to just let her eat it. i honestly had no idea that onions were toxic to dogs and i know i'm an irresponsible dog owner but i seriously had no idea until my mom told me later and i take full responsibility of it and i'm really upset right now and frustrated because i feel like i could've prevented her from eating the hamburger. she's an american akita and she's like 80-90 pounds. she ate the burger like 3-4 hours ago and she seems like her normal self. how long until she starts showing symptoms? what should i do? please help and no mean comments please!

You're not an irresponsible dog owner just because of this little accident. Don't stress that :) As for your dog, he most likely with be fine. He's so large that a few onions wouldn't hurt. I'm not sure if they are toxic to a dog, but if so, if he's fine and its been like 4 hours, I wouldn't stress it. I fed my chihuahua grapes then I realized they were toxic and I stopped. I had no idea. But he had like 10 grapes and it didn't bother him! It's ok! Everyone makes mistakes. That don't make you a bad person sweetie(:

I ever had a dog before, and she also ate onions and I find that nothing happens to her. So, you better calm down and watch carefully of your dog. Be with her for around 2 - 3 days, if you see something wrong, take her immediately to the veterinarian.
I hope your dog will be okay.. :D

Onions can kill dogs. The worst effects may take as long as 5 days to show. The small amount in this case won't likely cause a problem… but feed a bag of onion rings to your chihuahua and get ready for huge vet bills or burying your dog.

Onion: dog eat will get hemolytic anemia, and even to a dog's life. But if your dog with you to eat at Pizza eaten accidentally when a small strip of onion estimate that does not die immediately, but almost all presentations dogs diet books say dogs do not fit to eat onions , we should pay full attention to.

The amount of onions that would typically be on a burger won't be toxic to a dog of that size, she may vomit or have diarrhea.
Keep an eye on her and if she starts having severe symptoms, get her to the vet
Good Luck!
Add: If it's typical for your dog to growl at you when she has food, she may be showing food aggression, which you can correct if it's a problem. Here's a good article on how to get a grip on it,

She will be fine, ingesting that little bit of onion won't do much, the worst that could happen is she may vomit. Don't concern yourself, rest easy. Just keep a eye out next time.
