My older cat of 13 years has just died and her companion for 12 years is alone now and seems depressed.?

What do I do to help her process? I thought she knew her companion was passing and now that it has happened she's acting as if she is all alone although I'm here with her. Is there anything I can do? Will spending even more time with her help?

Update:

The cat I still have hates all other living things accept the other that just passed :/ And I had to cremate her. I dont know if I just pet her all the time or if I should try to play with her. Shes depressing me laying in all the spots the other did and shes doing this weird thing with her tongue it has been hanging out all day. Thank you though.

  • Condolences on the loss of your cat. The Messybeast web site has a good article "When Cats Grieve" which has lots of information and advice on ways to comfort your remaining cat.

I wouldn't recommend taking on another cat just yet. Your cat needs time to adjust to the loss of her friend and any new cat may just be seen as an unwelcome intruder, which will add to her stress levels. Has she been panting whilst her tongue has been hanging out? That is often a sign they are overheated or stressed.

    Sorry for your cat. :(

Yes spend more time but also your cat was so used to having that other furry cat around. You have other options too. Go to your local shelter and get another older cat to match. Or you can take your cat of 13 years to a taxidermist to keep around forever.
