Hey there, I am 16 and I have questions about my height.?

Hey guys, I am 16 and my height 5'5"-5'6"... my dad is around 5'7- 5'8 and my mom is 5'3.

I know i am in the middle of the height range and around what I guess i have the potential for. But, I want to grow to at least 5'8-5'9.

Now here is the thing, I read that one needs to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night to grow properly. Since the last year I have been sleeping 5-4 hours each night... which is not enough. Have I done any irreversible damage? I am going to correct my sleeping habits and try to get at least 7 hours of sleep each night. Can i still reverse any damage that I have done? I think the body release some hormones during sleep that are necessary for growth. Can i take any vitamins or do something to increase the output of these hormones?

I recently found out that i have developed a Vitamin D deficiency, which i believe is very important for bone growth. I have started taking supplements each day. I take Vitamin D-3 4000 iu each day. Is this good enough?

Also, I want to know if there are any exercises or stretches that can give me a boost even if its small. I realize that height really depends on ones genetic programming, but still, I would like to try and get taller. (BTW I swim every summer which seems to help me get taller each summer).

I am most worried about any damage that I have done by not sleeping enough.

I am desperate to get taller, because I dont want to short...

I can use all the help that I can get. THanks!!

As far as getting taller, there is no magical cure. Most doctor's follow charts, which are only a generalization. As far as doing damage by not sleeping 7-8 hours a night, will not inhibit growth. Yes it is true that you do tend to grow in your sleep, but missing a few hours a nite is NOT going to make a difference. As far a exercises, there are none that will make you grow taller {old wives tale}.

Make sure you are getting proper nutritution, especially milk& vitamin D, which really have not been proven to increase height.

The only thing that can help you grow tall is Human Growth Hormone, but because of you age and brain function, no doctor will prescribe you taking HGH. This is only used In severe xtreme cases.

Most doctors state that once you hit puberty, you stop growing...This is not always the case. My daughter & I both grew 2 inches after hitting puberty.

The only true way to tell if you have stopped growing is took look at your "growth plates} The are in your knees and elbows. Now if these have fused you have stopped growing

The only way to tell this is by doin x-ays, which no doctor or insurance company will pay for these!!

You can e-mail me if you would like more in!

Whish I better news! Best of Luck to you!

its possible to "stunt" your growth though poor health habits. but your growth is more dependent on your genetics and your pituitary gland. I am guessing you have a vit D deficiency because you are not going outside that often. you get vit D from sunlight.. you would be better off getting an hour or 2 outside time than taking a supplement. and yea 5 hours of sleep is not nearly enough. In puberty you should be getting 9 - 10 hours not 7 - 8. The average adult should get 7 -8 .. but your still a growing child and need a little more.

I hate to break it to you, but at the age you are now, it seems the height you are now is as tall as you're going to get. Most females start and end growing at an earlier time than males. You're expected height based on the information you gave me, is what you are now.
