Are there any Akitas out there?
Hi, I have been on the look out for Akita puppies. I recently was scammed out of $300 for one. It was a hard lesson learned. I have looked on petfinder, in local shelters, on the oolde market, craigslist... everything. I do want a good dog but I don't want to pay $1000 for one. I just don't have THAT kind of money. I already have a mutt and she is great, but I want to be able to have a dog to put in shows and what not. I know if I want a good dog I will have to put some money in it but, I just wanted to see if there was anyone out there who was willing to sell me one for a little cheaper? Am I just going to have to save up for one that is really expensive? If anyone is local and has some for sale that will be great. I am willing to travel, but only to the states touching mine. I live in Alabama. I will NOT buy a dog from anyone who wants to ship it. Sorry, I will not be scammed again. But thanks for the help. I am mostly near Montgomery Alabama.

Start saving.
As others have said, you're probably looking at a minimum $2500 for a show quality dog. That may include a contract that allows the breeder to retain rights to yay or nay breeding, so they maintain their lineage.
I'd contact a good breeder and start forming a relationship now, before you're ready, and start learning all the ins and outs of how to show, what will be involved, and how much support you can expect before choosing a final breeder to get a puppy from. Get in contact with the local breed club. Talk to the members, learn as much as you can, see if you can go along to some local shows and get pointers, have them point out faults as well as good points. Learn everything people knowledgeable are willing to teach, and during this time, save, save, save.
Then put a deposit down with the breeder you've selected, and wait for the litter. Let the breeder guide you as to which of the puppies appear to have show potential. And keep in contact as you train your pup and take him to puppy shows to ready him for the ring as an adult.

No way on earth are you going to get a show quality Akita for only $1000. You could get a well-bred (meaning from heath-tested, champion parents) PET for that. Of course, you can get an Akita for less from a Backyard Breeder, but it sure won't be show quality, though you could enter it in shows and provide the other exhibitors with extra points....

If you can't afford a good dog, don't expect responsible breeders to cut their prices for you. Breeders who would do that are probably trying to scam you again. Breeding dogs properly is expensive and costs thousands of dollars per litter.
If you decide you do want a show-quality Akita, start here: http://www.akitaclub.org/NewACA/Breeders.htm . Nothing wrong with shipping a dog as long as you're dealing with a responsible breeder, that's the way we exchange breeding stock. But be aware that being a member of the club does not guarantee the breeder is a good one, so do your homework and ask questions (what they've done at shows, health testing of parents, guarantees, etc.) But at least you won't be sold a non-existent puppy. If you can find one within driving distance, so much the better. Then you can meet the pup's mother and other relatives.
BTW, Akitas have a HUGE number of health issues, so this site should help you when you discuss the health history of the breeder's line: http://www.canadasguidetodogs.com/akita/akita_arti... . The breeder should be willing to discuss the issues and have his breeding stock tested clear of as many of the problems as possible. Absolute minimum would be hip & elbow X-rays, thyroid panel, current CERF (PRA, etc.), and von Willebrands Disease.

If you want to show then you are going to have to save for sure.
I am with rottweiler rescue and I know that akita and all other breed rescues are the same, in that I have never seen a dog come through rescue that could step into a show ring. Maybe once or twice over the years. Most of the dogs we get into rescue come from the $300 type back yard breeder and this is the type you will get for that sort of money.

If you want a show dog you will pay way way more than $1000- more like $3000. Cause that's what breeders get for show and breeding stock... You may find a breeder that will be willing to co-own for a reduced price, but that's a whole different ballgame. And you still have show entries to pay for, and an weekend show ain't cheap// You could be showing for many many months before you get the points you need.. Good luck with that search.

a well-bred puppy is going to cost close to a grand.
If you dont want to pay that much, then keep checking shelter and rescue. Consider adopting an adult. Sometimes breeders have adults they want to retire and place in pet homes, and often only want the cost of spay/neuter for the dog.
I'd refer to the breed club to find breeders..

You will have to pay big greens for a dog worthy for show dogging and is a pure breed and easily trained. I'm so sorry you were scammed. I know they are shows for mutts , they seem fun https://www.google.com/search?q=shows+that+mutts+c...
Also, have you ever thought about adopting another mutt? They are great pets , like i'm sure you know.

You are better off saving your money. Akitas can have behavioral problems, and they are a larger dog so you will want one from healthy lineage.
