Is this tinnitus and can it be genetic?

Ever since primary school iv had high pitched ringing in my ears, or at least thats when i became aware of it. My dad has it as well. Sometimes (every 2-6 weeks roughly, though sometimes i dont hear it for months) the noise will 'swell' in one ear, the sort of ringing you get when you get whacked in the side of the head. it lasts for 2-5 seconds and goes away. I barely notice the noise except at night or if i have my fingers in my ears. Im pretty sure it is tinnitus though i am going to book a hearing test soon. I have been exposed to loud noises (loud music, machinery) though i am more careful now. Could this be linked to my dad's tinnitus? I have inherited heaps more qualities from dad than i have from mom even things like heartburn lol so i wouldnt be surprised. Is there any treatment for tinnitus? or anything that helps lessen the noise. Iv heard that earwax and hairs in the ears can cause tinnitus so can that be fixed

Yes, this is tinnitus. Try looking up some articles about it so that you will be more informed. You might have inherited a predisposition towards this from your dad.

It can sometimes be caused by excess fluid in the ears. So if you have allergies, they could make this worse. I have to take Claritin sometimes for my allergies, and it helps the excess fluid drain out of my ears. I was even checked for allergies, and they didn't find anything, but my doctor said that dust can aggravate the throat lining and cause a fluid and mucous buildup. I also suck on a few cough drops when I get clogged. This helps me a lot.

A hearing test is probably a good idea. You can ask them about things to help your tinnitus as well. Also, look up articles on how to treat it. I'm sure there are things you can try, maybe some herbs would help too.

I bought the Tinnitus Tamer which is a tone generator that gives you the ability to make various tones in order to mask it.

Some of the most soothing tones I found is around 4000 Hz which is similar to a bathroom shower.

This tool gives you the ability to set tones in different frequency ranges, different durations, repeat a variable number of times, etc.

I think the software license is $35. You buy it and you've got the software forever.

You're supposed to use a good set of headphones with it that mask outside noise.

In addition, Dr. David Holmes, Senior Audiologist at the Hearing and Balance Center in Hurst, Texas has developed a Tinnitus Inhibitor that is placed behind the ear for a short time. This device generates an ultra-sonic signal that has had good results in temporarily eliminating tinnitus in patients.

It has received FDA clearance for medical devices and is available through prescription only through an audiologist or physician (preferably one who specializes in diseases of the ear).
