Because it was the last time France was a major force in the world. Today they try to act like their great but UK and Germany are the leaders in Europe.

Because he introduced the Napoleonic Code. The law was favouring the down trodden. He treated his soldiers well. He introduced a new order in Europe.

He was certainly not a butcher. His enemies respected his methods.

One - the historians are dubious about that book.

two - Have you read what was done during the Vendée war, or during the Terror in France? That was before Napoleon.

Actually, Napoleon wasn't a butcher (though he was quite the amateur baker, apparently). He was a career soldier and, later, a consummate politician and Emperor.

The French admire him because "he brought them greatness" ... The British admire him because they beat him (there's more glory in defeating a "great man" than a butcher) ... The rest of the world knows him for what he was - particularly the Spanish, the Germans, and the Russians.

Because of his achievements, the same goes for people like Alexander the great too.

People admire Mao Tse Dung all the time, he murdered more of his people than any other dictator this world has ever known.

Outside of France and possibly the United States, he is most definitely not admired.

    Same reason the Pope is.
