Experienced potato growers! If I miss some potatoes at harvest, what will happen to them?

I think I left some potatoes in the soil by mistake. I know I planted more than this. Will they grow into new plants for next season? Or will they just rot away and be wasted? It's pretty mild here, we don't have what you'd call real winter, so I'm not worried about the plants dying. I've been thinking it might be better to plant a smaller quantity several times a year than to have to dig up and store enough for a whole year at once. I have enough space, so should I just plant another section when the growing season's half over?

I realize this is a lot of questions in one, so I'm sorry, but I don't always get answers that I understand. Better to ask more at first instead of having to wait and ask again later.

Many thanks for those who answer, and especially if you have the know how that comes from practice!

If you have suitable weather it might be a good idea to plant 2 spaced crops. Potatoes left

in the soil could rot away, although some might sprout. That would be sporadic and just mess up

    your field.

Have you ever experimented with growing potatoes under a good layer of straw?

We did that some years ago in Ontario Canada and had very good luck.

If your ground freezes, where the potatoes are they will die and rot. If the ground does not freeze you will get volunteers, wherever. If your growing season is long enough to spread two crops go for it or plant more than one kind, like sweet potatoes, or some redskins for small potatoes to boil as a really early crop. If your weather is warm enough to plant pretty much whenever you want, go for more than one crop. I would still plant more than one variety to spread the harvest. I like the little ones in a boiled dinner about Easter and I like the big baked potatoes with whatever.

Mark your rows, don't be a squirrel and plant oak trees all over. Harvest what you plant, you will still probably miss some.

I've had both happen. Sometimes a some of the leftover ones make it and become plants. Other times they just rot and/or bugs or grubs get them. Its kind of a roll of the dice which will happen.

Nothing wrong with planting a few more when the current crop is 1/2 done.
