Wedding manners when it comes to invites and other things?

How long before the wedding is it polite to give out wedding invitations? Is it polite to ask not to receive gifts? We got everything we need/want and we don't exactly have room for more stuff (we live in a medium apartment).

Invitations are mailed 6-8 weeks before the wedding. It is not polite to mention gifts at all. If you don't want anything, don't register. Realize that most people will give you money, some people will give you wrapped gifts, and some will give you nothing. Be appreciative of everything and gracious.

Invites get sent out 3 months before the event with an RSVP of 2 to 1 1/2 months before the wedding. You may write on your invitations that "your love and presence are gift enough"

Normally six weeks ahead for out of towners and 4 weeks ahead for all others. It has become acceptable to send 'save the date' notices about six months out...

Some nice wording on the invite like "please consider a donation to your favorite charity in lieu of gifts. We have everything we need, and each other. Your presence is present enough for us.
