Why am I weak and shaky sometimes?
Some days I go into work and about an hour after I've been there I start feeling very weak and shaky. It happens sometimes even after I've eaten a good breakfast so it can't be hunger. I'm a housekeeper and it really affects my ability to perform my job; I have to go sit down and eat something more until it eases up. I mentioned it to my GI doctor who thought I may be lactose intolerant, but I always thought that just caused "digestive disturbances." Anyone else out there know what the cause might be?
Hey, Bob. I do check my blood glucose when I'm at work and it's always really low (between 50-70) when I'm feeling weak. (I'm also an aid/assistant to a diabetic patient so I have access to a meter). But my GI doctor says my blood tests all came back normal. (Probably because I wasn't weak during the times I had my last few blood draws.) I have Ulcerative Colitis which is controlled with meds, which is why I have to get blood labs done every few months or so.

50-70 is low blood sugar. Try to take some snacks along to eat before or as you are starting to feel like this. Foods and beverages that contain carbs have the biggest effect on blood sugar. The higher on the glycemic index, the more they raise your blood sugar.
High: 70 and up. Examples include instant white rice, brown rice, plain white bread, white skinless baked potato, boiled red potatoes with skin and watermelon.
Medium: 56 to 69. Examples include sweet corn, bananas, raw pineapple, raisins and certain types of ice cream.
Low: 55 and under. Examples include raw carrots, peanuts, raw apple, grapefruit, peas, skim milk, kidney beans and lentils.

Does your breakfast include animal protein sources? (good)
Carbs like prepared breakfast cereals (bad) and toast (bad), especially if *just* carbs.
Orange juice? (fructose - sugar - bad). Orange juice will sometimes do that due to high potassium and high sugar content.
If you have a good animal protein and animal fat sources in the morning, your blood sugar will be moderate throughout the day with small spikes when you consume something. If you eat a high carb breakfast, your blood sugar spikes and drops and spikes and drops each time you consume something, also leading to urges for sugary snacks to get through the afternoon.
Could also be due to B-vitamin lack or malabsorbtion which could be caused by either meds you are on (check the web for nutrition deficiencies caused by specific meds, or classes of meds) or your colitis. Most B-vitamins are essentially 'produced' in the gut by our healthy gut flora and animal protein/fat.

I am not a doctor but I think you need to have your blood sugar checked. I've had similar experiences.
