Does America forget French help?

Had a debate with a friend who threw out the customary "USA saved France twice" which in his view makes them "the better man". Why is it never (or rarely) mentioned that France greatly helped the US in their War for Independence and helped them out again in 1812. At the time France was a world power much like the US was during the 20th Century. Some would argue that without France there may be no USA (at the time anyways)

Except for a brief mention of Lafayette, there is no mention of French involvement in the American Revolution or the war of 1812. Most Americans do not know the extent France was involved in those two wars.

Washington had 2,400 soldiers in the Revolutionary war. Lafayette had 5,000 French Soldiers fighting in the Revolutionary war, French Count Rochambeau had an army of 4,000 French Soldiers.

Rochambeau attacked Cornwallis at Yorktown, Lafayette attacked from the south to cut off Cornwallis retreat. After they laid siege, Washington marched down from Trenton with his men and joined the siege.

American history books don't mention French being at Yorktown, and give the whole credit to Washington who was a Johnny come lately.

Yes, anyone who knows the complete history know that the USA exist only because of France. Unfortunately that is only a very small part of the American population who take history in college.

American citizens, by and large, have little to no knowledge of their own history, much less some detail about who helped who during the revolutionary war and the war of 1812. The US certainly would almost certainly have come to be without French help in the revolutionary war, just for the simple fact that Americans had grown so distant from England, and hated the English tyrants. On the other hand, were it not for French help, the US might be another version of Canada, subject to rule by the Crown. Oh wait, it already is! (We're just allowed to BELIEVE we have a sovereign country, while foreign operatives within our government (and the major news media organizations) usurp the Constitution and move our military forces about like rag dolls.) Certainly there would be no France without the Americans driving out the Germans in World War II. Do the French forget that? These are all silly questions, relying on over-generalizations of whole peoples.

I agree with you. I figure it's that by acknowledging the help of France, we acknowledge that we aren't as awesome as we want to think we are. For similar reasons, we often downplay the role of Great Britain and Russia in WWII. Great Britain was fighting for two years before the US got involved, and the Soviet Union suffered more casualties than any other country. But of course, the US won the war....

The French helped the USA only because it was a chance for them to hurt the UK. I think that they have been repaid, with interest.
